Great car, lots of fun. However as others have said you should consider petrol for such a small mileage.

I am still undecided on the DPF being an issue as it occasionally goes into regen mode (no light, just where the engine sounds s:censored:t but the exhaust sounds awesome and it idles at 1K). This uses more fuel while doing this. Still, if it becomes too much of a problem I'll just take it off as mentioned already!

In terms of comparing the 17" to 18" wheels, not had a problem with kerbing yet but that aside IMO the 17" are a horrible design!

Yeah, I get about 42mpg doing 80mph up and down the motorway but I have no idea what I get in town because I do nail it, the power and handling is superb, more so now that I have Koni SFD dampers, no more harshness over bumps!

Hi all,

Looking at buying an FR and test drove one today - loved it!!

I have a couple of questions though if you are able to help:

1) I have read a lot about people kerbing the 18" alloys. Do the 17" sit the same and have the same issue? (assuming you drive it into a kerb!).

2) Been reading a lot about the DPF issue (sorry - new and don't really know what this is!) and I only drive around 6 miles to work most days. Is this going to be an issue and should it steer me away from the Leon FR?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I drive exactly the same amount of miles to work, i've had my DPF light come on twice in 2 years, just remember to make sure the weekends are for driving!! if it does come on just follow the handbook instructions - no problem

17" have a taller sidewall so do offer a little more protection but really the only difference is a slightly hasher ride and more tyre noise from the 18"

A 6 mile run won't be too bad but would still need a longer run every now and again to burn off the excess soot. I have had two car's with a DPF a 118d and Cadillac BLS and had no issues with eirther even though they have spent most of their time doing short journes between a mile and 5 miles with the odd longer run at the weekend. The Cadillac had the dreaded EGR valve problem from soot inherent on the poor 1.9 GM/Fiat lump thankfully repalced under warranty.

The odd sprited drive is the best way to blow soot out of the system and get regeneration of the DPF going. But I think overall the number of DPF issues across most marques is quite low. The TFSi FR may be the better option but check out running cost's/depreciation first.

Mine has the pirrelli p zero's on 17's as standard and I have never kerbed it in a year and a half.Must be some careless drivers around. They offers some rim protection too.
As for the dpf issue, just had this happen to me for the first time,2 years old,.Dealer sorted in warranty as it was a sensor failure.I mainly do short trips and never even needed to do the regen so far.Oops just jinxed it now.

I've got 17" on my FR TDi, & yes they do get Kerbed I had Bridgestones on origonally & now I've got Michelins.

I drive 4mile round trip everyday, the reason I went for a diesel is basicly it's cheaper to run. I've had the DPF light come on once a full tank, but as long as you take it for a blast it'll be fine.

This is the most bizarre thread ever - wheels don't "get" kerbed or not - if you drive them into kerbs you'll damage them, if you don't they'll stay pristine - no matter if they're 17", 18" or 20"!

The 17" standard wheels look fine and don't look too small, apart form looks it's down to wanting to pay the extra and not minding a slightly firmer ride and more road noise. I prefer the 17" wheels to the 18" Ibera although black Orions do look nice but would rather have the slightly softer ride and do like the standard 17" on the FL FR TDi.

In the end go with what you personally thinks looks best as what looks good and not is a personal thing oh and paying the extra for the bigger wheels, I don't think the 18" have any real handling advantage :D

I think the only reason people bought 18" wheels pre-facelift - myself included - is because the 17" wheels look gash!

If I was buying new now, I'd get 17" as I prefer them to the 18" options

Spot on. I should have said that I meant pre-facelift.

I have to agree, 18s improve the look of the FR massivly IMO. And, as has been said, if you drive into the Kurb you're going to damage your wheels regardless so it's just about being really careful and always sticking the mirror down when you are parking.

One thing I have noticed on the FR though is that the reversing light is really dim so I find it hard to see the kurb in the mirror when parking in the dark - but, in these situaitons I'm just even more careful (or some people might say obsessed!).

As for DPF, our Leon is used mainly for a short 4 mile drive in traffic and the light has never come on... but I think we're just lucky TBH :)

I found the above too and fitted these http://www.powerbulbs.com/product_detail.asp?prod=83 to reverse/rear fog lamps , which are some 50% brighter [B)]
