I thought the newer water pumps had the issue resolved. Still a plastic impeller but made from a different/stronger material?

Dunno but the bottom line is they are made from plastic for a reason ans for the sake of £35, id do it anyway and most dealerships I spoke to before i did mine, recommended it was replaced at the same time. Will prob never happen in this country but, When temps drop during the winter, in extreme cases the coolant can freeze, if this happens with OE Pump, the worst thing that will happen will be the impeller will snap off the pump and the pump will need to be replaced.

If you fit a metal impellered replacement part and the same happens, bye bye timing belt and engine as the impeller wont budge.

They weren't designed to fail. They just did. The plastic was brittle and broke up in all weathers. I had a metal replacement fitted to the MK1 for years with no issues. It was a popular choice for when the cambelt was changed. You think Seat in spain give a toss about freezing weather? They don't even worry about the amount of rain other countries get and design scuttles, doors, bulkheads that leak over time

haha pmsl. Suppose your right. the bottom line is though, they were made of plastic for that reason. And most VAG specialists and dealerships will recommend they are replaced together.
