Hi Guys, I am about to buy a timing belt for my 2005 1.9 fr online. the problem i have is not sure which one to buy..do i need a tensioner pulley damper? and should i change the water pump?
Thanks
The hydraulic dampers were on older 1.9tdi engines. My 55 plate ARL engine did not have a damper. Check your engine code with part diagrams on vagcat if you're unsure. Most parts sites will list parts as being from or to a certain VIN code to help find the right kit.
Always replace the water pump, and with a pump with a metal impeller. It's only slightly more expensive and could avoid catastrophe.
I also replaced the thermostat at the same time. If you do the stat make sure you buy a genuine one, the aftermarket ones aren't much cheaper and allow quite a lot of flow even when closed so the engine can take ~15mins to warm up!
