Timing chain - is it worth writing off my car?

Hi guys,

I have a 2003 Ibiza 1.2 with 100k on the clock

Anyhow to cut a long story short the timing chain has slipped/broke 100 miles from home. It's at a garage atm, I'm awaiting to see the damage that's done

Any ideas on cost and if its pricey is it worth me writing off my Ibiza

I don't think (m)any insurers will pay out against this

it may be cheaper to source another engine for it.
wether or not you should scrap it is all down to you really. i loved my old 1.2 so if it had happened to that i would of had it sorted out regardless of cost.
and it would of given me an excuse to 20vt it
theres always plenty of AZQ motors on ebay. see how much the garage want & see how much it will cost to get an engine & get it fitted & go for the cheaoer option out of the 2. or if you really arent that bothered about the car break it for spares or sell it as a non runner. people are always bidding on them on ebay

I may be able to source another 1.2 engine quite easily as my friends is possibly breaking his. Only thing is the cars 100 miles from home so I bet transporting the engine would be pricey

Hmm selling it as a breaker on ebay sounds like a plan if it's too much to repair. Hope I can get some cash for it if need be

You can ship an engine for £70 I think. Just need to get it on a pallet. Either that or do you know anyone with a small trailer you could use?

That sounds pretty reasonable. Sadly I don't know of anybody with a trailer. I wonder how much the fitting will be for an engine would be, probably not cheap I can imagine

Silly question time, is the 1.2 classed as an interference engine? If the valves and pistons aren't designed to occupy the same space at different times, you can just put a new cam belt/chain on and drive away. My 1.6 Astra shed three timing belts in it's life, but because it's not an interference engine I didn't have to do anything other than change the belt.

You can ship an engine in the back of a van if you can get it in and out. Thinking about it, I've shifted half a dozen paving slabs in the back of my car that probably weighed more than an engine.

I'd expect an engine swap to take best part of a day, so £400 ish at a garage (8 hours at £50 an hour).

Edit: Ignore that first paragraph, looks like even the 1.2 has pistons and valves getting friendly...

I wish it could be just a swap of the chain to sort it buddy. Heard horror stories of damaged/broken engines on here due to to the timing chain slipping/breaking :/

I think the only thing I've not done yet is an engine swap, I've swapped everything doing various jobs but I've never done it in one hit.

Sadly it wasn't an option

Turns out its gonna cost me 500 when I collect it later. Never felt so ripped off before
