hi there i was wandering if you can help me i am thinking of buying a 1997 toledo 1.9tdi. i was wandering if n e one could tell me what to look out for on them and also is it possible to chip these engines and if so how much any help would be much apreciated. thanks

if its a 97 one then it will be the 90bhp TDI engine, still a very good block, can remap to about 110-115, speak to Upsolute who are best with the non PD ones for about £300. do a search for upsolute you will find loads of good reviews.

As for what to look for just the usual with cars really. Check it goes ok, revs freely and gets to a good top speed otherwise it might just be the MAF which is at fault which is common on older TDIs.

Lookout for rust! Espescially underneath; the inner sills and inspect around the rubber grommets, of which there are plenty! Water leaks into the boot is also common. Check electrics work as they tend to perish where they go to from the body to the doors.
