As far as I can tell the mechanical link from the boot handle has become disconnected. Neither the key nor the handle will release the boot. The central locking solenoid can be heard so that hasn't failed.

If anyone has had to fix this before: how do you get the boot open from the inside? I mean I can crawl in from the back seat area, but the lock is not accessible. What's the minimum I can get away with destroying?

And once open, what did you need to do to fix it?

You have to get into the boot area by folding the rear seats flat, then you have to loosen the screws in the boot trim.

Then i just pulled the trim out (it's not easy, but it will come out and you'll break the part near the lock but it's the only way i could get it out) Then this is what you'll see.
I just loosened the two nuts either side of the lock and then you can open the boot.
Hope this helps.

I wimped out and gave it to the garage to do in the end. He got the trim off of the boot lid and could get at the mechanism that way.

The handle had broken (it's a casting, strangely enough) and a new one was needed.

This happens on mine allllll the time I hit the bottom of the boot lid with the side of my fist and it normally pops open
