I have a 2001 TDi 110SE Toledo.
This car drives fine but normally after a 10-25 mile drive it goes into limp mode. Very slow no performance at all. Before then, perfect performance. If i switch it on and switch it off, it is fine for a little while.
It doesnt do it every trip but say every other day.
I dont think it is a turbo problem. Im hoping it is a an air mass meter but would think the fault would be more regular if this was the case.

Any ideas??

Well it has gone faulty again and i connected it up to the software. Faultcode 17958- which is

cant find any leaks any where. Did notice a little bit of oil in the egr valve but that is it.

just to put the MAF out of the question, disconnect it, if she runs more consistently, then you have a faulty MAF.

well at least it worked for me....

Does it go into limp mode at motorway speeds, 50-70 ish? If so it could be the EGR valve sticking open. EGR should only open at mid-revs, and be shut at full chat. When they get gunged up they can stick open, just a little, but enough to let exhaust pressure in as you try to open up - the ECU sees this as overboost and puts you into limp mode.

Simple check - disconnect the electrical connector to the EGR control valve (on the bulkhead) and see if the problem goes away.

Remedy: Clean the EGR valve.

I did clean the EGR valve but to no avail. I found that if i did 60 mph in top and floored it, the car would go into limp mode between 65-75 mph every single time i drove it like this.

Just to say that i disconnected the turbo thrusday afternoon and dismantled it. The whole unit was covered in soot. Only one vane was slightly sticky. However the actuator rod was quite stiff. After a thorough clean of the whole unit i put it all back together.
The result??
Full boost at all revs and i tried flooring it at 60mph and it went straight to 100mph at full boost many times with no trouble at all. Looks like it is all fixed.
2 days later, still fine.

Many thanks for all your help
