I just went to look at a new Mazda MX5 and i was offered only £10000 for my pristine Platinum Grey 54plate FR TDi with 18K miles on the clock!? Surely this cant be right parkers suggests £12000. Please advise as that is just scary!

not many garages use parkers they use glasses guide instead.but saying that i have just looked in the glasses guide and they say 12800 for one in excellent condition with 18k on the clock.i suppose it also goes on how much there car is.

A good trade in price at a dealer usually means you are paying top dollar for your new motor. It's swings and round a bouts, you can't win. The dealer will strive to give you a crap price for your car and make you pay a much as possible for the car you want ( ie rip you off ). If he offers you a crap price for your Leon try and get a discount or Metallic Paint etc thrown in for free. If you are not happy sell privately and buy from an Internet broker.

LOL

TBH all cars depriciate as we all know, esp when a new model comes out, also in the glasses guide is it 12800 for trade in or private sale?

we have all seen the big drop in resale value recently. Lots of people complaining about it.
I have also seen a few people buy a car and then try to sell it at a higher price than they paid for it 6-12 months ago. Good luck is all I can say.

If you find the right buyer then they'll pay the price. But for the majority who see R's on the forecourt brand new at 15k, 10k is probably about right.

Sell privately if you don't think its enough - but you might have to wait a while for a sale, and every day older it gets it could be depreciating more.

Good luck in whatever you do though.

the mazda dealer will only palm it off to a seat dealer anyway as they cannot sell it themselves

sell it privatly but i doubt it`s worth more than 11.5k id say it`s worth about 11k trade in.

try a different mazda dealer maybe you will find a muppet sales person lol and they will give book price

there are loads on autotrader at the moment.

im hoping when i come to sell mine the options i have on the car will make it more desirable to a private buyer than the flooded market of standard cars.

what do you expect you biught a car at the end of its life, of course depreciation will be bad.

Depends what you're buying, as well. You should always get a better trade-in price against a more expensive car.

I decided to change the LCR in October, which seems to have been just before prices started to slide with dealers offering massive discounts against new models. The first dealer I spoke to about a V50 offered £8.5k for the LCR. In the end, I got £13k for an '03 210 with 31k on the clock.

Except...

I didn't really, because I got £3k discount on the new car, so the "actual" trade-in was (a still decent) £10k.

PL03 KKX - miss you.

I wouldn't get too upset at that offer.

The salesmen was obviously confident of selling that MX-5 at a good price, so he didn't need to offer you a high trade in. He'll know his margins, tell him you'll take the MX-5 for £15k if he gives you £12k for yours (if you are happy to spend the extra 3), leave him your contact deals and walk away.

Another salesman on another day will be desperate to make the sale, it's all about looking around and finding the deal that suits you.

Bare in mind that a lot of main dealers have a policy of not negotiating on price for the first X number of days (up to 30 days at some dealers!!!) that the car is on the forecourt. With something like the MX-5, i imagine they get a lot of well paid naive customers that are happy to pay nearly full window price. Try again at the end of march - they'll be flooded with trade-ins, made a mint on 'new' sales and probably be more willing to let 'used' go for a good price.

just depends on the car ur tradin against u say £10k for urs so they get £5k and ur car there not goin to allow £2.5k and ur car they need more there after commission and bonus's m8 my dealer offered me £13k for my 03 lcr v.good cond wit 18k on clock but aganist a £18k car but if i went for the £16k car they'd only give me £11k
