Turbo Cooling time?

I remember back in the day my mates with Renault 5 GT turbos and Escort RS turbos use to let their cars tick over for a few mins after a spirited drive.

I went out for a bit of a thrash today (Mrs not in car:funk:) first time ive really give it some in 6 weeks of owning it. I gave it about 2 or 3 mins when I got home to tick over then turned it off

What’s the consensus with the 1.8T? Let it tick over for a while or is this a myth?

Defected!
A minute or so to let the oil run through and then you've got a secondry water pump that keeps going for a couple of minutes after you turn off the ignition. I also had an RS Turbo and a Renault 5 GTT back in the day, bleed valves and massive exhausts.

Does the handbook really mention it? Ive actually never checked.

After a blat or long motorway drive i keep off boost for the last 2-3 miles which is fine as im entering the 30mph town section near my home and then I leave it to tick cool for about a minute maybe two if its a warm summer day

secondary water pump isnt really for the turbo, cooked oil is potential issue.

either take last few miles easy, or 2-3 mins wait.
(so if you boot it all the way then have to wait for cooling it takes longer than taking last few miles easy).

60mph roads dont require you to boot it.

I try and tone it down a bit on the last mile or so of driving, then leave it about 30 secs - 1 min when I stop ... luckily we live towards the middle of town so quite easy to take it steady before I stop... different story when I get to work though, and I often end up sitting in the car for a minute or two before I go inside to let her cool down a bit better...

Im still yet to get an answer for anyone on this but from what ive found out the 180 LC DOESN'T have a secondary waterpump like the LCR has,

I have just bought an Ibiza, tdi, FR and I asked the same question to SEAT yesterday.

They told me they had NEVER heard that you need to let the car run pre and post a drive, to lubricated and allow the turbo to cool down.

I am not you actually need too, but I am sure it won't do any harm. Plus, I think it is more for highly tuned turbo's etc.

U can find out by listening once you've turned off your engine... on the LCR that definately DOES have the secondary pump you can hear it whirring for a few mins (think its 10 or 15) after you've turned off engine.

Not sure I would go with their reckoning to be honest.... and as for it being for highly tuned turbos - any turbo spinning at the revs they operate at is going to be creating some pretty damn hot temperatures, and having done a bit of reading up on oils recently, even synthetic ones dont react too well to being cooked, and like people have said on here numerous times, the oil will end up cooking, shearing and breaking down in the turbo if it is too hot...

Like you said, it definitely wont do it any harm to leave it running a bit when you stop, and I for one don't want to run the risks of the potential damage caused by not letting it cool down a bit!

Just realised this might be taken as having a bit of a pop at you - I don't mean it in that way incase that's how you read it mate!

dont think a handbook will mention "after driving over the legal limit, be sure to leave the turbo to cool down":cartman:
