Stumbled across this thread and wondering if the same applies to mk1 leons with petrol turbo engines? My LCR does this, it's like a sort of "ooooo" sound which rises and falls with the engine note. I wasn't thinking it was the turbo because it happens at below 2000rpm which is about where the turbo spins up...

Its a notorious topic for the pd140 mk2 Leons. Some Fr mk2 Leons have the same problem. Rather than it being a major mechanical issue seemingly, its more of the irritating noise category. No loss in performance, yet its bloody annoying [:@]

This is what mine sounds like (not my car) but you get the idea...

I believe it can be a number of things. I know your Mk1 will have a different garrett turbo, yet they work similarly. Its either wearing bearings, noise of the air over the variable vanes, or slight play in the blades?

All I know is that there has never been a definitive answer, always either "nothing wrong" or "needs replacing".

As your moo type noise falls below the 2k rpm threshold, sounds like the bearings wearing to me ( that is if it has just started to make that noise?)

It's been doing it for a while now, couple of months or so. Mostly it disappears or gets quieter once the car has been running for a bit, think it's worse when its' cold. Can't say it's down on power really.

Also my turbo isn't a Garrett, it's a stock K04-023 like on all LCRs. The bit I'm unsure of is that I thought that turbo isn't spinning below about 2000rpm when in gear and not at all in neutral? The ECU controls turbo based on engine load doesn't it? I do get the noise in neutral, hence why I was thinking maybe it wasn't the turbo...

out of my knowledge base tbh, maybe you should post this issue in the Leon Mk1 forum, loads of great lads and ladies in there who can help more than I can...oops yes K04, silly me.

Strange you would get the noise in neutral...could be anything....u'd best get urself over to the mk1 forum, they'll have a guess as to what the issue is.

ok. I had my own turbo re-conditioned and according to re-conditioner the noise was been created by a bent turbo shaft. Or im sure thats what he said. I can confirm nows its been repaired and back on no noise is now audable like 'police siren/owls'. Thank good cos it was doin my head in. If yours is making this racket there is something not right.

Before I bought my Leon I test drove 4 other ones that had less than 10k miles on them and they all did it. Mine does it, it has done it from day 1 and as far as I know it's quite normal.

Cheers, have created a new thread but I have searched and posted on this before and got very little response. My noise doesn't seem to be as loud as the one in your vid tho.

Noticed today it doesn't seem to be engine RPM it's linked to, seems more like throttle pedal position - the noise picked up when I put some throttle on to move off but it didn't drop with the engine RPM when i lifted up the clutch. Maybe it's not a turbo issue for me.

Sorry for the thread hijack!

I had this on my Mk5 Golf GT 140 which I have just sold. Two different mechanics said it was nothing to worry about. One went further to explain that when the turbo gets really hot the blade ends start to fold slightly creating the 'siren' noise. It had it from when I bought it (25,000miles) but got progressively worse until I sold it with 76,000miles on it.

The mechanic also thinks you can help prevent it by letting the car idle before driving and when you come to a stop to give it a chance to warm up and cool down. I'm no mechanic by the way, jut sharing my experience and what I ahev been told. I hope I don't get the same problem on the Leon! Didn't notice when I test drove the car yesterday.

Im having the same owl noise no loss of power but between 1500 and 3000 revs you can hear the siren noise? Can anyone recommend a good recon or refurb place in the west midlands?

Cheers

Im having my own turbo reconditoned and hopefully have it back tomorrow, it was making the siren noise for a long time then it started to overboost, i was told it was something to do with the waste gate, but i didnt wait about for it to pop, i got it out and sent off to get reconditoned as soon as i could

Which place did you got to to recondition your existing turbo?

Has anyone had the owl noise cured by replacing or repairing a turbo?

I remember reading about a member on here that had a new turbo fitted under warranty and the owl noise was still there.

Mine disappeared once my turbo was replaced.

It was definately the bearings on mine because the turbo went pop whilst i was driving it.

It sheared a fair bit off the impella when it went too.

I got a reconditioned one on exchange and once fitted havent had any repeat of the siren noise.

My 2.0 PD TDI had it (2 years old). I took it to the dealer who said it was a known fault and they changed it under warranty. Now the noise is gone (I hadn't realised just how loud it had got) and fuel econonmy has slightly improved (approx 2 mpg better on the run to work).

Mine does this, local specialist says its very common. Also nosier when the engine is cold.

Am I right in thinking you can check powerloss using VAG COM ? Compare turbo requested boost to actual? Is this a reliable way of working out if the turbo is going, or if its just because its a PD140?
