hmmm... that's the exact same sound as my knackered turbo - are you getting a lot of white/grey smoke too?

I must admit if mine was only making the noise and was not smoking I'm not sure I'd have realised the turbo was on the way out as some noise seems quite common. However as I said before the new turbo is silent, though both turbos pulled the same.

Now am worried :|. Only some dark grey smoke when accelerating at first and a bit when putting your foot down. Its pull ok.

have recorded a video of the noise from turbo (i think)......car was stationary at this point....

youtube.com/watch?v=qBFygR5_76A

I have had that noise for over 10k miles. Nothing to worry about. Normal wear and tear on the turbo, no perfromance loss. Annoyed me at first, now I dont pay attention to it. Lots of threads on this issue (its the renowned owl turbo noise of the pd140 and pd170's). Turbo is very close to the bulkhead, hence why it is so loud.

Dark grey smoke is only the soot that build up the old dogs. Nothing abnormal in a diesel. The only time you should worry is if you lose performance, and a massive white cloud eminates from the exhaust. Then that is a blown turbo. My dads mg zt-t makes a quiet owl turbo noise in the same 1500 to 2200 rpm range, so does my mates passat pd130. Its very common.

I did not think it, the garage did. this was with about 90k on the clock and the car was an ex- rep car

oh ok.....makes me a bit worried mine does sound like a police siren, 116k now on the clock and one previous owner on a 06 plate but drives & pulls fine

My brother got a turbo under warranty for good will because it had just past 3yrs but that eventually failed but his siren was loud for around 10k on both occasions before it completely failed on both occasions pd 140 remapped,
He was told by vw that they have made changes to the build and quality of the turbo to prevent this problem and the last one touch wood been ok up to date....
1st turbo went @ 29k 2nd failed @ 72k 3rd still going strong and remapped on this turbo car has oil and filter every 6k car recently sold but we know its on 125k without issues yet

Mine is the pd140. And problem started at 29k, now got 32k. Still drives fine but is always in the back of my mind, so can never really enjoy driving it . Did your bros cause any other damage when it eventually died and under what type if driving did it go.

Mine is an 07 plate, I have an extended warranty but it's not worth the paper its written on and due to time limits I can't claim on it now. From what I read unless something was physically broken inside they won't pay out, and don't think mine is damaged, more likely bearing failure.

My PD170 does this also. Still feels fine, but I bought the car like this at 100k.

Mine sounds at its worst when the engine is cold, once warm it's not that loud, it will do it between 1500-2000k on a gentle part throttle, full throttle and it's not there.

No smoke or lack of power.

Mine is also worst when cold, and when you Rev to about 2500 rpm and let go again the is almost a metalic sound as if the turbine is just ever so slightly catching
