Hi

Hope someone can offer me some advise...

Driving back from Snetterton today pulled up for a while then drove off (1 hour later at a guess) and noticed that when the turbo kicks in and "winds down" on my 2003 Ibiza Tdi (130) a stange noise is produced. I dont "boot" the car and only give it some beans when needed to perform a safe manouver, but the noise is present beans or no beans.

I'd describe it as a whoosh noise (almost paper rubbing on a fan blade - or high pressure air escaping through a small hole) rather then the normal whistle. Quick visual revealed no apparent hoses not attached properly but it was a very quick check from the top, and theres no apparent loss of power, there seems a greater turbo lag but that may be my imagination worrying about this. The noise is very noticable and is quite intrusive compared to the "normal" turbo noise.

The car had its 60k service at the dealer 2 weeks ago if that comes in to the equation.

I'll give the dealer a call tomorrow work permitting, but any advice would be welcome I have no mechanical knowledge but can handle minor checks, or if any one can recommend a VAG specialist in the Maidstone area I will take it to them instead of the dealer to get this checked out.

Many thanks

John

Mine also does this but with no apparent loss of performance.
I believe there is some sort of pressure release from the n75 boost control valve which is located on the bulkhead passenger side as you are sat in the car.
Hope this helps
Glynn :D

Update: This is still going on, car seems smokier and has a bit more of a turbo lag then normal. You can hear the turbo whistling still but its dominated by the whoosh noise that suggests an air leak.

Had a dealer and independant garage listen to it, dealer said this its "normal" for the turbo to make this noise but I can book it in for them to check it out, idenepdendant garage seem to think theres a problem somewhere an air leak or filter not fitted properly but recommends dealer looks at it as they just serviced it.

Does seem odd that its only appeared since the dealer serviced the car about a week ago...

Any one have any ideas on what I could check my self, either garage cannot fit me in until the back end of next week. So if theres something I can do myself I'm happy to give it ago!

Whoosh does sound like an air leak, check all pipes. Is there any info on Vagcom? Not sure if it picks up air leaks or not.

Best to get it in and checked though

VAG-COM sheds no light. :(

Decided to book it in with the Motorist Centre in Canterbury, as they where very helpful over the phone and inspired confidence that they knew what might be wrong, and can have a look at it before the dealer!

Will let you know what it is just annoyed that something apparently simple can be so difficult to get diagnosed.

Yes actually you can hear the boost in the pipes. I thought there was something wrong with mine untill I heard a golf gt tdi pull out of a junction and it made the same noises as mine!

I've done a visual check from top and bottom can't see anything obvious.

Listened with the bonnet up too but couldn't put my finger on it :( would say it might be down near the intercooler but I'm not 100% sure.

Its suprising how much Seat have crammed in such a small space!

Guess it must be a spit pipe or something that I can't see.

Thanks again for your suggestions

Yes, sounds to me as if you have a split pipe, or its come off a little.

Usually the bottom pipe from the side mount, infront of the driver behind the fog light, id lift the car up and check the bottom pipe,

Does it make the whoosh sound when just sat not in any gear, just revving? But does it then do it louder when you are in a gear and moving?

If so, then its got to be a boost leak, and no doubt dealer done, if they have messed about with a oil change, they might have knocked, split a pipe.. it isnt NORMAL.

If your 60k servive included a cambelt change, then they would have removed the black plastic boost pipe that runs kind of behind the drivers side headlight along the top end of the engine, for access to the belt and engine mount.

After I got mine back from the 60k service & cambelt change, one of the pipe joints kept popping apart under boost and they tried to say one of the pipes was "worn" and needed replacing at something like £70-80.
I told them where to go, drove it home gently, and found they just hadn't pushed the pipe joints together far enough before putting the clip on.

So I'd say it's a bit of a coincidence that you have what sounds like a boost leak shortly after the pipes were disturbed for a cambelt change

T.Spark, yes it makes the whoosh sound when standing and not in any gear, just revving. It's a lot louder when you are in a gear and moving. I'd agree with your diagnosis! Thankyou! :) It's getting the time to locate the problem pipe, I'm posting in my tea break :)

Muddyboots, it didn't have a new cam belt. Was told that's done at 80K...?

However it did have a brake fluid change, looking at the location of the brake fluid bottle I think they would need to remove the boost pipe to perform this task also.

It is a conincidence but they really :censored: me off this morning and not sure I trust them with my car anymore. Unfortunately its the wrong time of year as I'm working 7-4 then helping my folks on their farm as its the start of the harvest so not got time to pop her up on some blocks to have a look. So I will send it down to the garage I mentioned in Canterbury on Tuesday as their rates are reasonable and from speaking to them on the phone, I should be able to get it fixed in one visit.

I appreciate all your help and suggestions its just unfortunate timing for this to crop up (no pun intended), a quiet start to the week has turned into chaos!

Thankyou all again, I will let you know the out come on Tuesday

I know the MK4 TDIs used to have cambelt changes specified at 60k, maybe more recent ones have changed to 80k.
Have a vague recollection of a thread on this subject a while ago....

But yes, the symptoms definitely suggest like a leaking pipe or a badly mated joint.
Might be handy if you can get someone else to rev it a bit while you stick your head down the front of the car and track down where the noise is coming from. Should only take a few minutes and might save garage time/money if you can tell them where to look.

Hi John, didn't know you were on here and drove an Ibiza! I saw your username and then that you worked on the farm so I'm guessing its you! Its Chris Arnold by the way if you hadn't guessed.

I'm sure The Motorist Centre will be able to fix it for you no probs. I had a few problems with my local SEAT dealer so took it down there and they sorted everything out for me. I'm taking my car down there again next week for a problem the dealer had supposedly fixed twice!

Whistle no whoosh :)

Thankyou to all who offered help and advice on this one... I have now had the problem resolved.

Motorist Centre sorted it out and she now drives like a dream, I hadn't realised how much the problem was affecting the performance of the car.

It turned out to be a broken lug on the boost pipe from the intercooler which thus wasn't seated well at all. So one new boost pipe and clip and shes now running like a dream. - Thankyou to the chaps at the TMC Service who offered an excellend service.

Arnie - sent you a PM hadn't realised you where on here and had a leon!
