Turbo re-sealing or replacement? [TFSI FR]

Hi guys,

I have an 06 plate TFSI Leon FR. I was told on my last service that my turbo was leaking oil.

I've had conflicting information from different mechanics about this. One has said you can get a 'reseal kit' for it to sort the issue, whereas the other garage advised the turbo is a very precise peice of equipment and can't simply be sealed up.

Apparently it takes a specialist to undertake this kind of work. (and apparently only 12 or so of these firms exist in the country). He said that if it is definately leaking oil then the whole unit will need to be replaced which will cost £££

Can anyone comment on this? Anyone know how much a new FR turbo costs? (K03?)

Thanks for any help.

There is a load of places in the country that can repair you're turbo no problem, I've used a place in Leeds called Turbo Clinic twice, one for my Octavia VRS last year and ive just had my K1 Turbo reconditioned as I had engine failure. Haven't got it all built back up yet so can't say anything about that one yet.

It is a specialist job to recon a turbo as they balance them as the impellers spin at about 300,000rpm you shouldn't have to replace it, just recon it. Should be about £400-500 for a recon afak, a new turbo from the dealers will be double that amount I'd say.

Thanks for the replies. The garage didn't anything about the turbo needing to be reconditioned, just said it was the seal on the turbo that needed doing? Any idea what they mean by this?

Also is the KO4 turbo a lot more expensive than the ko3 replace?

If the seals have gone it would be kicking out loads of smoke. Does it do that when you put you're foot down? If the seals have gone the turbo will have to be stripped to replace them,it's is just a recon really.

If you replace the Ko3 with a Ko4 you'll need it remapping and a few other things and it get really expensive quick.

Thanks for the reply,

No, doesn't kick out any smoke at all to be honest.

Could the mechanic be referring to the seal that connects the turbo to the manifold? Am getting another mechanic to check out Tuesday.

Can't think what else it would be :headhurt:

If it's the gasket from manifold to turbo it's not too bad a job. If it is that it will be a maximum of £15-20 for the gasket then about an hours labour. Of it was the seals in the turbo you'd be getting oil running through and out of the exhaust which causes excessive smoke, so I can't see it been you're turbo really.

Got the car back today. Thankfully no turbo issues at all. There was only a slight bit of oil in the intake pipe but nothing to worry about. They guy said he wouldn't have even mentioned it if he was the one doing the service. I think the original garage was talking s***.
