i blocked off my egr today, i used a nail to block up the vacume pipe. all seemed ok but on the way to work tonight the engine light came on. i did some searching and this way seemed the quickest way to do it but why is the light on. so i took the nail back out. is there any other way to turn it off without getting an engine light up. thanks

What year is your car ?

IIRC the later ones can throw a fault, the earlier ones like mine (2003) seem to tolerate having the vacuum pipe blocked.

Your best bet is to get hold of vag-com (or someone with it), and turn the EGR down as low as it will go. You can't disable it completely this way, but better than nothing.

EGR minimum setting = VAGcom setting 33768

(370mg/stroke

tho i read somewhere u cant do this on PD lumps , only the older VE types , worth a punt anyway

thanks muddy, just got to make a friend with vag.com that lives in the bedford/milton keynes. so if anyone who could help me out i would be most pleased.

Vagtech near Milton Keynes have Vag-com, I'm sure they would not charge much to change it seen as it should be a two minute job given that you have the values and section that needs changing.

I'd do it for you but I'm waiting for a new laptop before I move from the shareware to registered version.

PS: Whats an EGR valve?

exhaust gas recirculation , recircs a wee amount of exhaust gas back into inlet manifold when not on 100% throttle to make emissions nice n rosy , unfortunately coupled with CCV (crank case ventilation) it has a nice habit of clogging up the intake

So is this purely a mod to increase the longevity of the engine by stopping the clogging or can it provide any other benefits such as performance or economy?

Just reading your thread about disabling egr by blocking the pipe with a nail. I have an October 2004 Ibiza TDI Cupra and, despite what everyone has been saying on the forum, I read on the Ross Tech web site at http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/tdi.html that you cannot turn off/down/disable the EGR on PD engines with VAG-COM. I think that on the PD engines people believe they have turned down the egr because VAG-COM offers this option and is the same software whether you plug it into a 110TDI or a 150 or 160PD.

Anyway, today I did the same as you by blocking the vacuum pipe and after 10.3 miles I got a CEL warning on the dashboard. Also, I noticed that, even though part-throttle response was better, and the engine seemed to rev easier, it felt as though peak torque had dropped (especially noticeable in 4th/5th/6th).

Maybe you can help advice me? Did this happen on your car? What happened when you unblocked the vacuum pipe and reconnected the eg? Is there anyway around all of this?

have a look in the TDi section, there is a massive thread about the EGR valve and what peoples think about blocking / turning it down. ;)

Thanks for your message, RichieRich.
I see your Ibiza PD is one of the newer ones, therefore, would you please let me know what happens when your friend at Audi turns your EGR off (and how he does it)....

EGR question

can you turn off/disconnect the egr on a 20v turbo?

Hi Matt

Sorry, but I really don't know. I have played with and driven diesels for years and could not comment on the petrol. I am not even sure that the EGR system works in the same way on a petrol. My only advice [as you may see from the many threads about diesel EGRs] is beware that your ECU may realise that you have in some way disabled the EGR and therefore through up and fault code/engine light.

Good luck.
