Tyre Noise/Droning - again and again.........

I have done a search and have read through alot of threads, but cannot find one with the same symtoms as what I currently have.

I get a reasonably loud droning/whirring noise (no vibrations at all, its just noise) most noticeable at about 40mph on smooth roads, its not as bad the quicker I go, but on the rumble strips - like the ones you get when approaching a 40 limit out of a NSL - the noise pretty much goes away, then comes back on the smooth road.

I can't detect any play in the wheels, so I doubt its the bearings, I can see no leaks from shocks or anything either.

It does seem like its tyre noise. I had 4 new tyres fitted about 4 months ago and has started making this noise in the last 4-6 weeks or so.

Will it be down to uneven wear? If so, what could cause this uneven wear?

I have had the same make/model tyres as I have now on my previous car and they never made any noises.

If anyones still awake after all that, can anyone help..????

Thanks in advance :)

I get it even now my tyres are well worn in, on some roads! Ii think its the friction between the tyre and different road surfaces

I know it seems like a silly thing but it can make such a noise

It can make a fair noise.... like I say some surfaces it doesn't appear to do it. I think its coming from the back.

Quick visual check, the tyres are wearing fine, and there are no bobbles/eggs or anything.

Yeah but this is what i had, the tyres were/are fine, i may be wrong but i would say you could do the standard checks to see if it could be a wheel bearing or something although i would say give it a bit and see if after a few 100 miles the noise goes down a bit?

Do you go on one particular route?? and it does it??

At some point on either the M25 or the M4 there is a redish strip of road and it's almost like the car's an aeroplane there this a funny noise..

maybe just go driving on loads of roads and see if you can see anthing common between them??

Bit far fetched I must admit.. but sometimes it purely is the surface..

Mine makes a similar noise, but only on concrete sections of motorway like on the Hull side of the M62 - any other surface and it is absolutely fine. if it's still bothering you i'd reccomend extending your left arm, place your hand on the stereo volume button and increase volume until karma is reached again.

I had this problem in the past, at about 60mph coming from the back. It did sound like wheel bearings but a new set of tyres on the back cured it.

re: tyre noise

Are your tyres directional, if so It would be down to tread distortion where the tread blocks tend to wear unevenly and create a sort of fan shape or a raised area on the leading edge, Have seen it many times in the motor trade. Remedy? New tyres I'm afraid fella......

My LCR does this on that new, very smooth black tarmac, make a kinda BurrrrrBurrrrBurrr noise if that makes sence, as soon as i change surfaces it goes away, there are a few bits of road round here that do it,...nothing to worry about in my book mate..

I've got a friend that experienced the same problem, we finally got to the source of the problem, water in the tyres. Seems when we were respraying his alloys we let the tyres down to make it easier to mask off. When we refilled we used his dads air compressor which been standing for a while and hence had vapour in it.
