Hmm - I'm looking at blackcircles.com for my rubber and they don't list the F1 asymmetric although they mention the Eagle Asymmetric XL, although that's a tenner a tyre more than the Excellence. The Excellence is £90 fitted which isn't half bad...

Hi, I had exactly the same problem with my '56 reg Leon FR TDI - took the car back to the main dealer that I bought it from (less than 10k miles) and was told that my rear tires (standard bridgestones) were stepped on the inside edge.

The reason for this (according to the dealer) was due to the firm suspension and the fact that the bumps are absorbed by the tires (no ****!!). So I took i in to a local tire place and they've see the problem a few times on the MK2 Leons and MK5 Golf's. Conclusion - Bridgstones are crap!

Replaced all 4 tires (yes fronts were illegal as well) with Michelin Pilot Sport's (bloody expensive at £500 for the lot) and the "wuuring" noise has gone but there is still quite a bit of road noise.

As my drive to work is 40miles of motorway each way I am seriously considering getting rid of the car (only had it 3 months) and getting a Merc or something that doesnt sound like i'm driving a tin can! Which is a shame as i'm happy with everything else!!

Someone I work with has suggested using "Dynamat" over the rear wheel arches (under the carpet) for deadening the sound - apparently this worked on his Civic Type R - any thoughts?

Update time... I had a pair of Goodyear Excellences fitted this afternoon (yeah - long delay I know - I've been busy!) and it has definitely solved the whine noise that I originally thought was the wheel bearing. It has quietened the general road noise down a little bit too although there is still a definite underlying rumble. I expect that's pretty unavoidable with a tyre of that size with such a surface area touching the road. It's also probably not helped by the crappy budget specials on the front courtesy of the previous owner but the rate I'm chewing through those I don't suppose it'll be too many months before I get the opportunity to bung a couple of Excellences on that axle too...

Where'd you get them from/fitted? I'm needing to think about replacing mine (at least the fronts).

Looking at Eagle F1 Asymmetricals - ~£103 a corner or something (225/40/18) fitted/balanced/disposed of etc.

I got mine from blackcircles.com - dirt cheap. I've used them a few times and I can recommend them! If you PM me your email address I'll send you a link for an introductory discount.

I had this flagged up at the service.

4 new Goodyear Eagle GSD3's and a 4wheel alignment later and peace was returned.

HOWEVER 3 or 4000 miles down the road, the rumble is back and it's worse than ever.

I can't see uneven wear, probably due to the tread pattern, but it's going back in at the weekend [:@]

GSD3's did the same with my MkV Golf (see post #2) - to be honest I think loads of tyres do it but people just dont notice...

Not sure the dealer will be able to do anything about it...

YOU WILL notice it!!! some tyre are less prone to doing this [if you take away the alignment problem] my P R ZEROS are OK but my daughters with Bridgestones went 50p on the inner edge at 12k - if you search the threads it has been discussed quite a bit, but some one need to posts a sticky giving the best worst tyres - which may well conflict with handling !!!!!

I did notice it... hence saying the F1's caused the problem.

But some people with the problem just put it down to road noise, even some main dealers dont realise its a common problem (my Golf had 2 wheel bearings replaced under warranty because if it  )

Handy thread.. mine are suffering the 50p piece wear and is really noisy.. to an extent I can tell some passengers get nervous about it even though I explain that it's just tyre wear.. That doesn't exactly help matters when they then think that I'm driving them about in worn tyres! Thing is because of the strange wear, I bet I check my tyres more often than most people who don't have any noises! So I think i'm going to get 4 new tyres and get the car properly aligned on a beissbarth setup and see if that does the trick.

I can see how tyres with a solid band of rubber may be worse, eg F1's like mine.

They're definitely worse than the bridgestones.

Swapping front to back made it worse. New tyres required.

got nineteens on mine with enduro tyres , sounds bloody awful when slowin down , not 2 good when excelerating , in fact never buy mid budget tyres !!! Has anyone done a poll on which is the best tyre to go for ? i've got to change them its doing my head in :help:

Morning all :))

Had Dunlop SP9000 as standard from new on my 06 TDI Sport, Fronts were replaced at 26k for bridgestones (crap) now being replaced 14k later tomorrow. About 1k after new tyres the rumbling started. Actually thought it was the new tyres, but defo coming from the rear, probably set off by some twonk adjusting the tracking cos they read it as being out when the fronts were changed lol. Had kind of forgotten how bad the noise was cos my missus pranged it front end big time, but all is tarted up now. Really must start a thread and put some pics of it no here for sh*ts and giggles lol.

06 Leon Sport TDI - REVO 185bhp, Sat Nav/Bluetooth, CD autochanger, Bi-Xenons, in Black of course!!

Hi there,

Have a Leon MK2 2.0 TDI Sport (140) that has covered about 16K miles from new (06 plate) and I'm pretty sure the tyres have never been replaced. Getting an awful lot of road noise as mentioned by many others within this thread.

It's going in for a service tomorrow and they are bound to pickup on this. I want to get the tyres replaced to try and solve this problem. Don't worry I won't buy them from the main dealer!

Is there a tyre out there that resolves this problem? I've seen many people mention tyres which have helped, but then problems have started again after a few thousand miles....

What should I be buying?

Luke, I fitted Goodyear Excellences to the rear (very reasonable from blackcircles.com - PM me if you want a ******** discount) about 15k ago and the reduction in sound was significant and remains to this day... I was so impressed I put a pair of Excellences on the front when they needed replacing too. I'd definitely recommend them.

Deev - Thanks very much for that. :) Will give them a go. Can seem to workout how to PM you for that discount.. Can you try to PM please mate? Thanks, Luke
