Tyre sizes

Hello everyone, I'm hoping someone out there can help. On my Ibiza at the moment I have a set of 17" wheels with 205/40zr17 tyres on. I have bought another set of wheels for next year but they are 1" wider so have been told I will need 225 tyres. The problem I have is you can't get 225/40r17 but you can get 225/45r17 or 225/35r17. Which size would be best to go with? I only ask because a month or two ago I had to put some mk4 golf wheels on the front of my car as I needed to head to London and I had bad tread on my green one. The golf wheels were 205/55r16 which made my abs light come on as soon as I went over 60mph, I'm assuming this gapped because the tyres were to big? Can anyone help me please????

225/35/r17 are the nearest size to the tyres you have fitted at the moment, they would be the ones to go for.

Yes i would also go with the 35 profile. The reason your abs light came on with the golf wheels wasnt just due to the size of wheels, it was because they were different to the rears. They turned at different speeds and trigger the abs light. If you had put the golf wheels on all four corners, you'd have been absolutely fine, no abs light.

Yeah, remember the profile (35, 40, 45...) is not a size, it's like the percentage of depth to width. For a wider tyre to have the same diameter, it will need a lower profile.

If you had put the smaller wheels on the front the traction control would have kicked in cos it thought you were spinning the front wheels faster than the rear.

I been looking at priced today for the 225/35r17 and they are more expensive than the 225/45r17, If I was to get the 45's would it matter or effect anything?

You would need to consider if the wheels will catch anywhere and you would need to remember you will be traveling faster than your speedo is saying.

The cheapest 225/35r17 tyre that I can get locally is £105 each. The 225/45r17 was £75 I think. Can't remember exact prices. I don't think it would catch anywhere and I always thought that if I put bigger wheels/tyres on then I would be travelling slower than what the speedo says.

Nope - you would travel faster.

The speedo only measures how many times the wheel has turned per minute and so how far you have moved.

If you put larger diameter wheel/tyre combo on then the car will roll further for each rotation of the wheel so you will be moving faster than the speedo thinks you are.

It will tell you how far out it will be.

I had 215/40/17's on my 7.5" wide alloys on the Polo GTI. Could go for that size.?

The wheels are 8 1/2j wide so was told to go 225, I did think about going 215 instead of 225 but am worried there will be to much stretch
