I dont need tons of grip as im not pushing the car since having a baby so just need some reasonable grip which give high mileage on 225/40/18 so I dont have to change them for a long time until I have more money again.

I currently run Yokohama V105s on the car. Been very happy with the grip and wear has been good as I have managed about 16.5k on them on the front but they are probably no more than 1mm from the legal limit possibly 0.5mm off. Thing is I have never really taken them near the limit so probably have more grip than I require.

Would I be better off getting the Yoko blue earth ae50 for better mileage?

I know Michelins are great for wear and grip but they are so expensive and cant see anything but PS4 and cross climates in my size and i dont believe i need that level of grip right now so for me more money than i need to spend for the performance i require. If they had the energy range in my size I may have considered them as they are probably insane on wear.

Word of advice..

If you have a little one in your life now and the they are with you in the car either most or some of the time, never ever save try and save money by buying cheap tyres.

Premium or nothing. Regardless if you 're doing 30moh or 130mph.

They 're the only things between you getting home safe or getting scooped up.

I 've had budget/cheap tyres in the past in a previous car and lost it in a back road at only 40mph.

Just my opinion.

Grip and longevity are direct trade offs when it comes to tyres. Softer the rubber the higher the grip but the shorter the life and vice versa.

As said above don't skimp on rubber if you have a young un in the car !

Try continental sport contact 6 or Dunlop sport Maxx RT2 for a good all rounder without the price of going michelin

Another thing. Cheap/Budget tyres ruin the feel of your car as you don't have as much confidence in your car's handling anymore.

One of my previous cars ( Yaris ) was just a cheap basic run around with some proper dirt cheap ditchfinders for tyres.

I spent an extra £15 per tyre and it really changed the way the car felt and handled.

It's amazing how much difference a good set of tyres can make against cheap / budget ones.

I agree completely that I dont want budget tyres and more grip is always preferable. Yokohama is not a budget brand whichever tyre your putting on. They are still expensive tyres just like goodyear efficient grip etc. Not a lot in the price between those and the premium sports oriented versions such as the v105s and assymetric 3. Just different types of tyre for your needs. Less grip but have comfort and i would assume more longevity without being full on ditch finders is my hope. One thing i dont want is a dangerous tyre. I had that with my MK3 1.6 sport ibiza which did find the ditch as i left the nasty budget Ceat branded tyres on the back that came with the car when i bought it off someone. Since then I have always made a point of buying high end tyres or tyres that have been well recommended on these forums.im not looking to go super cheap but want alternatives to the high performance tyres with less wear and something more balanced. Michelin will always offer that but with normally very high prices. Their alternatives like tbe primacy and energy arent available in this size although still grip well in reviews. Although i can get the alternative with the recent continental premium contact 6 but I cant get the sport contact 6 yet in my size which i find odd. Only thing is I've not seen anything yet on how well the premium contact 6 lasts. Although the tyre holds up well even against tyres like the Dunlop rt 2 which considering its around £10 per tyre more you would hope so. Question is does it last longer? If so how much? If its negligible then i would just go with the performance oriented versions all day long.

Have you tried one of the online tyre suppliers. I have used blackcircles a few times and the savings are quite considerable and you get them delivered and fitted to a centre close to you all in the price. Sometimes they have deals on Michelins and they turn out not that expensive compared to contis etc. Worth a look imo and there are other companies as well you can source tyres through.

I've always found camskill to be cheapest price for new boots delivered then 10 quid a corner at a friendly fitter to put them on

I've got the standard Bridgestones on my car which are completley useless in the damp/ cold and i can't understand why manufacturers fit them to most cars?
I've had many different makes over the years and in 2 bad winters i've fitted Falken FK914s and never got stuck in the snow. These are a mid range brand and ones i'd fit without hesitation.

I've got a set of Cupra 18"s with goodyear Eagle F1s in the garage which i'm selling but might end up fitting them for the winter as they must grip better than the bridgestones?

Oh dear. The "which tyre" question always brings out the "don't buy cheap tyres" preachers. Yokohama are not ditchfinders.

If you buy decent branded tyres then you're OK. It's much more important that your tyres are properly inflated and have good amounts of tread on them.

It's the people coming the opposite direction I worry about.

I wish I had posed a different question now being which tyres have you had the most amount of mileage on.

Eagle F1 asymetric 3's. I get about 8k on the front of the cupra, and I'm unsympathetic to them!

Other experiences of tyres:
Avon zz5 shed their tread toward the end of their life.
Dunlop sportmax 3 were alright, not as grippy as eagles and equal longevity.
Bridgestone potenza (pretender) were horrible, not at all confidence inspiring.
I'm sure I had some other brand too in the middle, but obviously they didn't leave an impression!

Having Michelin Pilot Sport 4 s's fitted tomorrow on the front, meant to be the best of both worlds, but we'll see - I'm a big fan of the Eagles.

Worst tyres ever? Conti rainsport 2`s on my Fabia VRS. 3k from a set of fronts.

Without feeding the trolls: Personally, I'd favor grip over longevity, and just swallow the rolling cost. Because one day, that tiny extra cost per mile of softer tyre compound might just save someone's life.

I got almost 20,000m out of a set of Goodyear efficientgrip on my last car (Audi S3)

8k???? You weren't joking about being unsympathetic lol. I've had nearly 12k on my facelift fr (half the power I know) and barely touched them, which is a shame considering they're the awful potenzas!!!!

Jeez, that's something I can aspire to once I stop driving it like I stole it :p
I assure u that car got some serious abuse!!!! I did rotate them front to back when the fronts got half worn though.
