Morning all

I posted last week about issues with a power steering fluid leek - this turned out to be pretty bad and was attributed to a faulty power steering rack which has since been replaced. (costing over £400)

I went to pick the car up yesterday from the garage and all seemed fine for about 100 yards - was nice to have my motor back after driving a 1.1ltr Fiat for a few days - however all was not rosey for long - all of a sudden a sound/vibration came from the front passenger side wheel - a sound like the caliper was hitting the alloy. I turned round and took the car back to the garage and left it with them.

I went back an hour later to be informed that this issue doesn't happen with the traction control switched off - sure enough they are correct - if you switch it off then the brakes in ABS mode as it where don't come on unexpectedly. The conclusion made is that the noise/vibration was the ABS / TCS kicking in to stop wheelspin that was not there.

However i have 2 issues.

1. I am not driving everywhere with my traction control off
2. Even with it off now when braking the ABS cuts in far far to early and also manages to make some horrible noises.

I have left the car with the garage but to be honest they looked really confused as i departed!!

I am assuming some sort of sensor issue - any suggestions chaps on where i should direct the garage (not really my place to do but hey ho).

Cheers and apologies for the above war and piece.

Alex.

forgot to mention they have attached the car to their Snap-on diag tool and no error codes seen - i did suggest that they use VAG-COM - is it also possible that any faults would not appear on all diags stuff - just on VAGCOM.??

Cheers

Get a 4 wheel alignment done, your tracking will be a mile out or if you are running mixed worn tyres this will cause the ABS to freak as each tyre is spinning at a different speed making the car think your wheels are spinning/slipping

thanks for that - a few mins before you posted i got a call from the Garage to say that they had taken the car to have the tracking done and that seems to have fixed it - fingers crossed anyway.

Seemed a bit strange to me but they could do the balancing properly in house at the 18's were too large - their machine only goes up to 17's - or so they tell me - just seems a bit limiting to me. Either way looking forward to getting the car back this afternoon.

Personally I'd have to be questioning a garage that doesnt
A. Carry out wheel alignment after replacing a steering rack
and
B. Doesn't road test a car after replacing a steering rack

glad you seem to have it sorted though
