With virtually every fault in a VAG car registering a fault code of some kind, the pointers can be invaluable in finding the problem or replacing a part. Problem is, SEAT/VAG dealers charge around £30-£40 for reading the code, and the same again to clear it if it's something that can't be fixed straightaway. For the sake of a tenner off Ebay, you can get to the same information, fix the problem yourself and clear the code.

And there's a few more things available through the full versions of VAG-COM, but the freebie is still well worth getting.

You need the lead (Ebay), software (usually comes with the lead), and a laptop. Windows XP can make things easier, but Vista and 7 can be used with a little fiddling.

The one you found and the one Jon recommended will do fine. The VAG COM software will translate the fault codes into readable text, for example 'Cylinder 1 coil pack open circuit', would suggest coil pack 1 is knackered. (I get to see alot of these so it's one that sticks in memory!)

bit off topic but how much would it costs to get a coil pack sorted as when i was going to service my car but cancelled to go elsewhere as he was talking as though hed seen me coming lol. He mentioned if a coil packs gone it will cost me a lot to sort just want a rough guide so i know in the future if it ever does go.

You're going to get someone to replace a coil pack for you? Can you do me a favour, have a quick peak in a Haynes manual or similar to see how easy it is, on ANY car!

The most expensive coil packs I've seen are the ones that feed all cylinders, which I believe your 1.8 is? On Ebay, you're looking at less than £50, possibly slightly more for genuine VAG. It's probaby better going for genuine as they're likely to last longer, or go to GSF for a good quality pattern part. They take no more than fifteen minutes to swap, ten minutes of that is finding a decent radio station to listen to while you swap the pack.

If you don't want to be stiffed at your next service, get yourself VAG-COM, have a look to see whats wrong before you go to the service, then when they say 'oh yeah, it's your flaburating combobulator, it needs replacing', at least you'll be able to tell them where to go.
