Vag Tacho or Vag Commander?

I have a 2004 mk1 LCR

I need to read the SKC code so I can program an new transponder etc.

Which is best to buy and are there any major differences?

If you are thinking or getting the cheap Ebay versions I can tell you that VagTacho 3.01 would not read the code from my LCR, neither would Vag Commander 1.4. They worked in a Toledo but not on my LCR or a spare cluster I had from another LCR.

Vag commander 1.4 worked for me, it's a very buggy clone though, took about 10 attempts to get the right code.

Seen a couple that are version 3 / 3.6 also a listing for one that is 5.5

WIll the Vag commander work with other cables or you need special one for it ?

Just been looking at Vag tacho and some sellers say it wont work on Windows 7 and some dont can i take it that none of them will work then.

vag tacho works on the wife dell mini with w7 on it

I couldn't get the drivers to install on w7.

I have vag commander 3.6 on XP, drivers appear to install ok but software wont connect and read any of the EEPROM's etc. Also tried vag commander 1.4, 2.5, 3 and 5.5.

Does Vag tacho work with the same cable as vag commander?

So when you got the SKC code, how do you actually program the transponder chip?

Also looking at the Vag Tacho 3.01 cable from ebay and it says Opel on it? Does this matter or will it still work with my FR?

No luck with mine would connect but couldn't find the right security key
