VCDS Help!

[TravisFR]

So I was trying to put on leaving home lights but I was given the message saying that the equipment number was incorrect and when i looked it was outside of the parameters, i havent previously changed anything in VCDS, when i did a full scan of the car i had a malfunction on the CAN gateway which was

The CAN Gateway most likely doesn't like one or more of the settings you have changed in one of the other controllers.

Hopefully you did an Auto-Scan and saved it before you made any changes. If you did, please post it here.

Also, what version of VCDS are you using?

Has someone tried to retrofit navigation to the vehicle? It looks like you have an RNS310 but that it's not setup and connected correctly.

Navagation doesn't appear to be coded in the CAN Gateway, which is probably what's causing the error.

I would imagine that adding navigation to the installed list in the CAN Gateway will get rid of that error, but that definitely needs more investigation.

The error VCDS gives when coding some controllers about the workshop / equipment ID can usually be ignored by clicking 'No'. VCDS will try the existing numbers which will usually work. Pretty much any value except all zeros will work.

Yes, a log of an original Auto-Scan before any changes will confirm what has changed in the CAN Gateway installation list and what coding values have changed in any other installed controllers. It is always best to refer back to that first before making any further trial and error coding changes.

This also highlights the importance of always doing an Auto-Scan and saving the results before messing with any coding values or retrofitting something so in the worst case you have a record of the original control module coding values and can revert back to them if you need to. I personally also do a dump of the current adaptation values on a controller before changing any of the adaptations in it. You can never have too many logs.

Not necessarily though, as not all CAN Gateway controllers use the long coding to store the installed equipment list. A previous auto-scan would be not use at all then.

Besides, looking at the reset counters on the errors this clearly isn't a fault that the OP has just caused. It's a pre-existing problem.

It would certainly have helped identify what was pre-existing though!

Yes, that's true and I agree. In fact the CAN Gateway in my own car is one that uses short coding but it's clear that the one in TravisFR's car uses long coding so in this case a previous scan could be used to identify any before and after changes to the CAN Gateway installation list. A previous scan would also allow us to see if controller 37 didn't previously exist at all which would identify it as a new addition to the car.

All of this is of course assuming that any changes to cause these faults weren't done by a previous owner.

I hadn't done anything to the car before trying this, this is the only scan i'd done so havent got anything extra, it does have an RNS310, so this needs to be coded in? everything works as it should so unsure how they would have not coded it in?

In that case it sounds like a previous owner did a half-baked job of retrofitting the RNS-310 unit to your car.

You've got nothing to lose now so I suggest you just go ahead and add controller 37 to the CAN Gateway installation list...

1. Click the [Select] control module button
2. Click the [19-CAN Gateway] button
3. Click the [Installation List] button
4. Tick the [37 - Navigation] item
5. Click the [Save Coding] button
6. Close all the screens until you are back at the first screen again
7. Go to the Auto-Scan screen and select the option to clear all DTCs
8. Close and exit VCDS
9. Cycle the ignition off and then back on again
10. Run VCDS again then do another Auto-Scan and see what faults are still present (if any)

i dont have 2 antennas i presume but i have got 2 aux, centre one and the one on the RNS310, centre one doesnt work but the RNS one does so i imagine thats that fault

that fixed the error on the CAN gateway, any thoughts on the equipment number being too high in cent. electrics?

You will probably need to take the RNS-310 out of the dash and check the connections going into the back of it, but at a guess:-

1. The two aerials are one for the radio and another for the GPS. I'm guessing that the unit that was originally in your car probably didn't have navigation capabilities which would also mean that your car is unlikely to have a GPS aerial. If this is the case then I would expect to find no connector in the back of the RNS-310 for the GPS aerial. This also raises the question as to whether or not the satnav works OK (i.e. does it sometimes lose its signal?).
   
   
2. As you say, your centre auxiliary socket probably just isn't connected up. Again, checking the back of the RNS-310 unit will reveal if there is anything plugged into the external auxiliary socket connection.

The RNS-310 supports 2 auxiliary ports. The one on the front of the unit and an external one (i.e. in the centre console) which connects to the back of the unit.

Connector number 6 in the picture below is for the FM2 aerial. Do you have anything plugged into that connector or not?

Pins 1, 2 & 7 of connector 4 in the picture below are for the external auxiliary port. Are the 3 wires that come from your centre console auxiliary port connected to each of these 3 pins?

The error VCDS gives when coding some controllers about the workshop / equipment ID can usually be ignored by clicking 'No'. VCDS will try the existing numbers which will usually work. Pretty much any value except all zeros will work.

I don't have a no, only ok and cancel, how can I change the value? it's greyed over so can't change anything?

That would probably explain the "1048634 - Antenna 2 for radio" fault code then.

VAG cars usually have two aerial wires so if only one is connected to your RNS-310 then check to see if the other one just hasn't been plugged in and is hanging down the back of the dashboard somewhere. If this is the case then you may find that you still can't plug it in due to a plug incompatibility issue. If you find this then you will need a Fakra adapter something like this...

If it turns out that you only have one aerial cable in your car then you will need an double-to-single Fakra adapter like this...

Would this be why the signal on radio is pretty poor, sound quality through it is dreadful but to be fair i only use SD card anyway, i'll have a look but fairly certain theres only 1 aerial cable so will need the second adapter
