Interesting reading.. I never realised people were using cooking oil in their cars.. You guys must be totally messing up the national statistics for healthy eating. They would assume that their has been a 40% increase in obesity when in fact it's just a 40% increase in tightarses ;)

Where can you get the proper EN BioDiesel from I've never seen it and assumed it would be more expensive?

lol coming from a scott:p

I thought Bio Diesel was actually cheaper that regular stuff, could be wrong. AFAIK Bio Diesel is only sold in like 6 places in Ireland, so im forced to Veggi oil to do my bit for the environment (and my pocket!)!

but you'd end up paying fuel duty as soon as you go over 1200 litres(iirc) so no cheaper after 1200

On a bus that's licensed as a PLG it shouldn't be a problem.. I'm sure 1200 litres could be stretched out

Gotta think big!

a few of the lads at work have/ are running on oil in their cars, and they use rapeseed oil which is best aparantly, and if you want to get that then speak to your local indian restauraunt as they have to pay to get it removed, and not the local chippy as they use a different oil.

Over at TDI Club, one member from the San Francisco area bought a 2002 New Beetle TDI about six months ago, paying over $10,000. She has driven 7,000 miles using WVO in a two-tank system. Despite her best efforts, she now needs a new engine, at a cost of about $5,000.

Perhaps it wasn't the last 7k miles, but the miles put on by the previous owner. The fact remains, nearly EVERYONE who switches to WVO or SVO, has or will end up paying more for repairs than they saved on fuel.

Direct injection engines are, by design, not very suitable for conversion to run WVO or SVO. This remains true even for those using two-tank systems, where the veggie oil is heated before the driver switches over from diesel to veggie oil, and then switches back before shutdown, to rinse all the remaining VO from the system.

Unless I'm mistaken, some folks here are pouring SVO directly into their main fuel tank. This would be ill-advised for those with VE engines, but seems especially risky for those with PD engines.

I do not care how much fuel costs in the UK or anywhere else. It is not high enough to justify the damage that you will do to your engines by running WVO or SVO, no matter how careful you are.

Buy biodiesel, or make your own if you think you can do it properly. But at least recognize the difference, that biodiesel can be safe in TDI engines, SVO and WVO are never safe.

Didn't think my original post would sparked this amount of interest!!!!

I see what tornado is saying, but with my old Mk2 if anything goes wrong it won't be worth repairing anyway.

BTW, I carefully collected all of my empty veggie bottles today and being considerate to the environment took them down to the recycling bins at Tescos. Then I noticed that someone had left 40 ltrs of used veggie oil to be dumped. Was tempted to put it the boot, but reading this tread, I'm glad I didn't!

What do people use on their driveways when they've been a prat and spilt over the floor???:whistle::whistle:

To say I'm p*ssed off is an understatement!!

Just been over to the local Tescos and Pura Vegetable Oil has risen in price from 56p per litre to a staggering £1.07. That's an increase of 48%.

Well that now makes vegetable oil a bit pointless as diesel around here is £1.15 per litre, hence not much difference.

Great! So much for cutting costs and helping save the environment.

Strange, diesel is easier to refine than petrol and everywhere else in the world it costs less (and used to here); you find an alternative and the price of it somehow shoots up.. nothing to do with the fact more people are driving TDI's these days surely...

Bend over, big red's gonna come and arse rape you..

i noticed this a month or so back,20litre drums were all over a quid a litre, where as single litre bottles were 60-70p(this was in macro too).
expect this to have a knock on effect of a price of chips/fast food.
