Very weird heat shield rattle...

Hello all,

Having a bit of a headache with my cupra, was driving out of a car park yesterday and head a really loud heat shield rattle, sounded like a bit was dragging along the floor.

Got home and there is nothing hanging down at all, check the break heat shields too and they are all solid so left it as it was dark.

went to go have a proper look this morning and its stopped, only thing I can think stopped it is when i reversed so thought it may have been a stone or something.

However Iv just got back now and as i pulled on my drive it did it again I cant see any lose heat shields at all, does anyone know what it could be?

You'd have to get right underneath it and look on top of the exhaust. If it was a heat shield, it would - more often than not - be rattling on the exhaust. I've seen Ed China try and find something like this and he bangs everything with a rubber mallet and finds the annoying rattle.

Has your drive got stones,mines does, and i had the same noise which has now cleared,i think a stone had been caught between the brake disc and disc shield. but would have bet my life on it being a heat shield noise until i got my car on a ramp and checked it out myself and found no exhaust heat shield issues.

As per Toddy's comment, I had the same issue and i can confirm that it was a stone between the shield and disc. Was a really loud metal sound, like you described. It's happened a few times to me and on both occasions i have given the rear hub area a bang, each time a stone has fallen out. Simple but effective

I'd put good money on the stone caught between the guard and brake disk.

I had this on my old Ibiza, sounded like the exhaust was dragging along the floor!!
