sorry should of mentioned I have taken it to a garage and they reckon it failed but quoted me £2000 which is well out of my budget!! was still sort of hoping maybe they hadn't even looked at it properly and I could still salvage it!

Did they say how it failed? Are you still driving the car? Using any oil etc?

My max boost is 1.5 bar. 1.8 is high. (mines a vf23 so dont take that as safe for yours)

Im told that too strong a spring in the DV can damage IHI turbos.

Can't remember for sure but it was around 1.5! Funny you should mention the dump valve though because I did start to notice the sound wasn't as loud as it used to be right before the turbo went!!!
I'm not driving it at the moment it's been parked up about 6 months!!
I think they said something about seals and it running on its own oil, they reckon they had to stall it because the engine kept running with the key ignition turned off??
I also noticed earlier there is a small crack in the manifold!!

The car was originally set up by jabbasport I have no idea what dv is on there (guess that means dump-valve?)
As for boost levels I think the guage used to read around 1.5-1.8. All I know is that at the moment I start the car up there is a bit of white smoke out the exhaust and a tiny bit from somewhere around the turbo towards the downpipe area, after about 2 minutes thats it no more smoke but there is no boost when it drives??
I also think the lamda sensor has gone because I had vagcom on it and that was one of the codes??

1.5-1.8bar << there's the info I was expecting

IHI's ar not reliable when pushed hard.. VF34 bearings/seals will suffer.. and as others have said, the very small shaft/bearings will not tolerate anything other than a perfectly operating DV...

they will also run far too hot at these levels = cracks in mani, warping of flanges, failure of bearings etc etc etc - Been there, suffered that... and why I dont touch IHI's

Not worth the hassle..

Sorry - What I meant was ...what would be the turbo you recommend for the same (or similar) power level(s) of the vf34 and that also has the low lag etc..?

Thanks
