Water pump/ Thermostat

Hi Guys, new here so hello all!

Would love some info if possible, so I’ve been getting a rather bad coolant leak lately and my local garage has said it’s from the housing underneath at the front of the engine, it’s a complete unit with water pump around £360, also they said the cambelt needs to come off to replace so there labour for it all is around £500 plus new timing belt so in total around £900, does that sound about right for this job? I mean can the housing it’s leaking from not come without the water pump?

thanks guys

I am pretty sure the 1.8TSi in the 2016 Leon is an EA888 gen 3 motor like the 2.0 cupra.

The EA888 gen 3 is a chain driven cam so I wonder how the hell they are going to change the cam belt when it doesn't need one.

Unfortunately the EA888 gen 3 does have issues with the thermostat and waterpump unit.
Typical independent specialist prices to change it are £650
A dealer would be in the region of £1000

@AtleyD - as @DEAN0 has said, the 1.8 EA888 gen3 engine has a timing chain, not a cam belt.

If you local garage isn’t aware of this, I don’t think I’d trust them to work on my car; I’d find another, more knowledgeable garage.

Thanks guys, yer it’s the 1.8 TSi maybe I miss heard him and he said cam chain instead of belt, I was just more shocked at the price I didn’t hear the rest haha, so he’s kinda right then, to change this hill have to remove the chain and things because the water pump is driven by it?

Timing Chain does not need to come off to do the t/stat & waterpump change.

If you google it - there are many threads & videos on how to change it

you can buy the pump and housings cheaper on ebay its the same as the vw one just need the coupling to go with it,

they usually have a 15 to 20% off code every few weeks.
