Water pump.

Hi just joined today as hopefully buying at urbo tommorow!!!
Ive just got a few queries, i gather i should be looking out for door seal problems and wet carpets as well , but ive seen a few vague postings about waterpumps and plastic impeller blades?

Is this something which needs to be fixed or replaced a.s.a.p if i buy it?If so where can i get a uprated part? would it be from seat or a aftermarket part?

Also are tuning parts for golfs interchangable? Im interested in fitting a neuspeed thermostat and a magnetic sump plug nad wondered if anyone else has fitted them?
Cheers for any [potential] help.:)

It's something to be aware of

Depending on the mileage, you may be ok - mine died at 110k - but basically, the impeller on the pump can fall off and leave you with a bill for a new pump and timing belt minimum... sometimes (in my case) a blown radiator - which is very expensive to repair

If it's due a belt change soon, it's something worth doing at the same time, as the pump itself is pretty cheap ... if it's had a new timing belt, look for evidence that a new pump was fitted for absolute peace of mind ;)

Flares,

How much did you pay to have the timing belt and pump changed?

I got a quote from my local garage for £350 including parts / VAT.

Thanks

I paid £274 at a vag specialist , I think my local seat dealer wanted about £330 . Some independent garages were dearer than seat , but seat did say they dont manufacture a pump with a metal impellor but everyone asks for one with a metal impellor to be fitted

I think the metal impeller is actually an Audi TT part, isn't it? So Seat are right in saying they don't do one. They should be able to get hold of one easily enough though.

Its really nothing to lose sleep over mate, many temp/coolant system faults have the finger pointing at the water pump when its often not the case. Plastic impellors are cheap but they are used as the metal ones tend to rust over time so I'd stick with the OEM part! ;)

To be honest, it doesn't matter too much if it has been done with the plastic part. The metal one is advised because the plastic is prone to breaking up and falling apart, which in turn makes the car overheat, but it does last for tens of thousands of miles before that happens so you should be good for a while ;)
