what degrees of tint can you get?

would like a tint strip for across the top of the windscreen to make the sun less dazzling

also slight tint for the sides to stop getting a truck drivers tan

and moderately (not dark!) tinted rear would be nice.

have seen sheets advertised on ebay for £20 etc...they all seem pretty dark

is there like level 0 (barely tinted) up to level 5 for almost black, or something?


grey tint might be nice too....

Its illegal to tint your front passenger windows but you would get away with light tints. anything behind the front windows you can have as dark as you want!

From experience:

If you're going to have your windows tinted, then consider Supaglass aswell. Had 'em done on the last car as the wife felt safer with smashproof windows. Not cheap by any stretch of the imagination (anywhere up to £800) but professionally fitted (with or without tint) is a good security measure. As it happens, the cost for the Bora was about £500.

Also, be aware that if the VOSA guys stop you (or the Police do, and call them in) they can check the level of light transmittance at the roadside, and if your fronts are tinted, then you either have a limited time to get 'em removed, or they impound the vehicle until you arrange for removal. It depends on how they want to feel on the day. I know of one bloke who sat at the roadside scratching the tint film off his windows with a coin before he was allowed to continue his journey.

50% is the darkest. otherwise known as LIMO black. thats what i have on the back windows of my Mini.

You can only have 25% dark on the front. nothing more. you can also get 10% which is clear film but obviously darkens it abit from standard

Mirrored is ok. i know someone that has it. its really good if you get it from the right angle. you can see right through at some angles though. i wouldnt do it yourself. you will get branches in it everywhere...and bubbles...and bits of dust....and it will all show. i did it on mine....

The limit is 70% visual light transmittance (VLT) for the side windows (and 75% on the windscreen), but bear in mind that clear glass does not allow 100% VLT, so you do not have an automatic allowance of 30% to tint. Add into this the fact that some windows are factory tinted, and these will be either at or close to the legal limit. Even adding clear film (like Supaglass) will reduce the VLT so you need to be carefull of all tints in front of the B pillar. The only way to be certain is to invest in a VLT meter and check your chosen tint film on the glass prior to full application.

Professional tint companies will know from experience which of their products are possible to fit to whatever car glass, and given that they face prosecution for illegal fitting they'll probably advise you accordingly when you ask them.

It's not a part of the mot test either so you'll not be failed for it if you do tint the fronts, but VOSA do roadside checks for the Police on demand. Insurance companies also will like to be told, and may increase your premium for doing it.

Well said. i forgot to say that. i think they say that factory tint is about 13% isn't it? If you get the work done properly, they should have one of the testing things that you put over the glass. well said bud.

be better leaving it to the pro's like me , if you dont know what your doing then you will easily crease the film or get dust behind it.

ebay stuff is cheap and nasty, creases easy and peels off easyer.

sun strips can only be a certian hight depending on your windscreen.

need a sharp snap off blade knife,
heat gun,
hard cards,
film on liquid (can just use water and a tiny drop of baby shampoo if you cant get the right stuff,
bright lights,
soapy water,
scraper blades,
and more.

need a dust free area aswell.

tinting should be left to the pro"s it takes alot of practice.i fit large format graphics and the occasional tints on comercial buildings(flat glass not curved like car windows) i gave it a go with the ebay stuff and its no good.

the real stuff is hard to get and expensive in small quantities,by the time you get it and make a mess of it you would have been better off just getting a pro install..theres a few places near me that do tints from £100-£150 thats a good price for pro install.
as for mirror film i think thats all around 50-25% way to dark for the front windows just asking for police attention.

someone mentioned being able to see through tints from certain angles.if theres light in the inside of the car the tint will be more see through from the outside i.e if its night time and you put a light on inside the car everyone will be able to see in.
in daylight the sun will sometimes be directly on one certain window causing more light to shine through to the inside and making the interior more light and visable form the outside so giving the impression that from certain angles you can see through more.

whatever you do don't buy the cheap stuff from e-bay! friend has done that in the past and it was crap and illegal if you go to a proper place mate they will just have rolls of film and they will make you a sunstrip however you want it, call up a few tinting companies thats your best bet mate
