What is it called??

Hi everyone!

I was just wandering what round silver component is that is under the bonnet at the top left of the engine cover. Looks like the intercooler pipes go into it before going into the engine.

Sorry for such a noob-ish question! Also, is it supposed to have oil on the front half of it?

Only my warranty is going to run out soon and if it is faulty I want it replaced before it does run out!

this was in the TDI FAQ but the hosting of the image keeps on changing as people removed from their photobucket hosting etc. Google images always returns a result though.

How much oil is on the front of it? piccie?

That is a 1.9 TDI North American spec engine. Basically it's a non PD TDI engine whereas yours is a PD engine which makes it a little different.

No 9 is the cap to the housing.

The valve will have some misting about it which doesn quite often collect. It actually has a hole under the diapragm to vent. Changed few in the past, eventually collects back again, just as simple to clean it off.

thats certainly more than a new one would have, and more oil than i have seen before so a little wet there. If you have the cash and time then swap out, but otherwise clean up and dont worry.

How easy is it to take it out to clean it up?

remove the pipes, couple of bolts to remove. Set aside a few hours i would. Theres loads of info about cleaning it in this TDI section.
