Going to have a look tomorrow. Anything specific to look for? I read somewhere about turning on the aircon and listening to the fans, but other than that just the usual?

Rather than looking for a bargain and it possibly ending in tears why dont you look at it from another perspective?

What is the car worth to YOU?

It doesnt matter what other people say is too much / too cheap and so on ... your the one paying for it not them so you decide what the car is worth and pay what you feel is the right price. Not somebody else...

IMHO I dont care what mileage is showing on a VAG car as long as the service history is fully stamped up, CLEAR evidence is shown that it has been looked after properly and it is HPI clear...

I've owned several high mileage VAG cars... and some low mileage cars and funnily enough it was the low mileage cars that gave me more trouble... cars dont like short journeys / lots of stopping and starting... it knackers them out.

So dont base your decision on mileage alone.

My own Cupra has gone from 69k to 103k in two years... its now considered high mileage but runs perfectly. I'd bet on it being in better condition than most lower mileage cars of the same year on Auto Trader ;)

My 2p :)

No it's just that this topic is a stalemate, to a certain degree you must care about mileage, if you truly didn't then why not by a cupra that's done 103k instead of 69k and save yourself some money.

You mean someone has an opinion you disagree with?

It's a forum mate... not everyone is going to agree.

I didnt set out to find the lowest mileage car I could for my budget simply because I do not think it is necessary... plenty of clear evidence of cars with 40k that have had a hard life out there...

Heck I've had a 21k mile car that gave me more trouble than anything I've owned!

I bought a car with 69k miles as it was the nicest I could find for my budget at the time and was the right colour / specification... if the car had 100k on it at the time I still would have bought it :)

What I was trying to get across to the OP was dont judge by price / mileage although keep it in mind obviously but judge by condition.

Condition alone ... is what is most important.

Clearly a third time might sink in, ITS A STALEMATE. I'm FULLY aware that people are going to disagree. That's WHY I said ITS A STALEMATE. By your rule of thumb mileage has little meaning in the grand scheme of things, obviously something the car Market disagrees with as it is 1 of the fundementals in valuation of a car.

... and like I said its MY opinion ... so not sure why you feel the need to argue about it?:confused:

Anyway valuations of most cars on here are all a personal thing as the majority are modified therefore 'market' values as you put it are irrelevant. ;)

But he isn't buying a modified car? I didn't buy a modified car? Therefore valuations are relevant. I'm not arguing I just disagree. It's a forum mate... not everyone is going to agree. Like I said I give up.

It all comes down to what people are prepared to pay for a car though and that is my point regardless of a 'valuation' ?

Surely people agree on that?

Although mileage does reflect in a cars price it does not mean a car is knackered/rubbish.
its all based on the old fashioned "when the car hits 100k its a gonna", well that doesn't exist anymore, most engines nowdays are designed to do 200k-250k as long as its serviced well. I would prefer to by a car between 80-100k miles on it on a 2001 car knowing its been run well than a 9 year old car with 40k on it thats been used to just run to the shops, now thats the turbo that isn't gonna last is it!

Matey as suggested pay what you feel is correct for you and what value you put on the car not what others suggest you should or should not pay, its personal choice :)

Crikey - you try to help make sure someone on the forum gets a good buy and not ripped off and

In regards to valuations and mods - they absolutely are still valid with mods. Mods add nothing to the price of a car, anyone who mods should know that (unless its heavily modded but even then you'll never get back your investment). Quite often mild mods like a chip and exhaust put people off or slightly devalue the car over a standard example......

IMHO :p

:D

Whose to say they are getting ripped off if they are happy what they have paid for a car?:lol:

Again imho that comes down to the individual... I've sold plenty of modified cars for more than a standard equivalent vehicle would cost. Obviously you wont get everything back you've spent but you shouldnt get less than a standard equivalent car if your marketing it correctly.

IMHO ... of course :D

IMHO (god what a great saying! ;) :p hehe) if you research the car you're buying enough you shouldn't get ripped off and be happy with the price you've paid for the car and this will also let you negotiate a price you feel is fair.

While you may be happy buying a car for 4k and think you did ok, it can happen that you look around a for bit after buying yours (as people do like to see if they paid a good price) and you then find most go for a grand less, its a strong person that wouldn't have a little niggle they'd paid a bit over the odds even if happy with the car......!!!

It really is about getting as much comparison with others as possible I think. As I'm looking around at the moment for my sis, theres no way I'd get her to pay more than 3k for a 2001 with 75-90k miles based on the prices I've seen them going for - just need some to be a little bit more local, as unlike me she's not prepared to travel to get a car!!

To summise - buying a car is a very personal thing and every single person will go about it a different way and looking at different things - I think thats basically what it all boils down to!
