Just did a lil search on the halfords website and theyve got an option where u put your car reg in and it recommends the oil you need for your car!

It came up with Castrol Edge 5w30 Fully Synthetic Oil @ £15.49 for 1 litre.

Any good?

Good, shame about the price. You will need 5ltrs.. £15.49 * 5 = £77.45.

I can gurantee you that Millers XF Longlife is FULLY 100% Synthetic........unlike some other *cough* brands. We don't trick customers into buying a 70-80% synthetic oil because of certain marketing loopholes.

Thought mobil 1 0w-40 was ok,vw 502-00 or vw 500-00 is 1 of the specs specified in my handbook to use.
Ive been using mobil 1 0w-40 since owning my LCR.Costs around £40 for 5lts,runs well on it though.

turbin tbh Chris has some of the most useful oils information on the forum, seeings as he works with them day in day out. 5w30 is the grade listed in the handbook but obviously this may differ country to country due to temperature range. I don't see what harm 0w40 can do but I would stick with stuff that is VAG approved incase anything happens further down the line, warranty issues etc...

turbin I don't know the difference or the reason why, I'm sure Chris can discuss at length and probably has before but I thought 504 00 and 507 00 was the required approval?. That VW 502/505 listing could be the same?.
Although personally I've not heard of anyone harming their engine with the wrong oils but I'm sure it happens all the time.

Mobil 1 0W-40 has the following builder approvals:
0W-40
MB-Approval 229.3 X
MB-Approval 229.5 X
OPEL Long Life Service Fill GM-LL-A-025 X
OPEL Diesel Service Fill GM-LL-B-025 X
BMW LONGLIFE OIL 01 X
VW 502 00 X
VW 505 00 X
PORSCHE Special Oil List X

and Chris mention VW502 and VW505 as approved oils, so.... it cant be a "wrong" oil ?????

I'm sure Mobile would not just make up the builder approval list for fun. Anyways, I'm using it with great success and this is the very first time I've heard Mobile 1 0w40 is NOT approved for LCR. Would very much like to see some documentation that is in conflict with Mobile's own statement.

Well im no expert on oils and would gladly listen to someone who is.:)Ive used mobil 1 0w-40 for 35k miles now since new and had no problems, only doubt i had was the 0w could be too thin,i think mobil do actually do a 5w-30 aswell, which is also recomended for LCR.Ive always thought that because the 0w-40 had the vw spec 502-00 on it then it was ok to use, thinking that a slightly thinner oil when cold would be better at start up.
Anyway not wanting to cause an argument i wouldnt mind hearing what chris had to say about it,just out of interest really.:)
