What on earth is this?

My guess is the gearbox oil bung (but mine has a hex to undo it), its where you put the oil in!
it gets blown out at high RPM when the oil's a little over filed. it kept happening to me until JBS got rid of the excess oil @ an indicated 155mph
not really an integral part of the gearbox, but it does stop the crap getting in.
