Hi Guys,

New to here. I currently own a 2007 Astra SRI Cdti XP. Its been a great car but Im now looking for a change. I am really keen on a Seat Leon BTCC K1 but am divided between staying diesel and going for a TDI 1.9 BTCC or to go for a Cupra. I do around 12-14k a year and so I am not sure what would be best for that kind of distance. Im looking to spend up to around 11k. So I have a few questions:

1) what MPG would I expect to get with mixed road driving on a Cupra petrol and what would i get with the TDI?

2) Is the Cupra a much better car?

3) Any known issues or things to watch out for or either?

4) Do they handle high millage well as I want to keep the car for around 4 years.

Anything else you lovely people think would be relevant or useful in making my decision.

Ta,

Kevin

1. 25mpg in cupra - 45mpg in FR
2. It's a different car, can't really compare them to be honest
3. DPF on the older FR (before 2009 face lift) can be problematic. Coil packs/DV/pcv valve are common failures on the cupra but a cheap fix
4. There's quite a few FRs and CUPRAs on 100,000 miles etc. probs more

Hope that helps a bit

I think you are borderline between diesel and petrol on mileage, although I would edge towards the Cupra at under 15k. I would drive them both and decide which you prefer.

Look after the car and it should look after you, even with big miles.

I have an fr cr170 btcc and love it! However as Betty says there is no comparison. I was filling one done the A1 last weekend and thought I would give him a poke with a sharp stick and see what happened.......... Us diesels know our place! Did et a wave when he pulled off though! Leon's all stick together!! Both cracking cars though!!

If you can get a Cupra then get one! I came from a 2.0 A3 TDI to the Cupra K1 and the Cupra does very well. I drive mine nicely mon-fri to and from work and i get great MPG figures. Then the evening or the weekend comes and i give it a little blast here and there.

Your driving style is a huge factor but like i said, drive it nicely and you'll be fine. Obviously you won't get as much as TDI but it does well for the engine and power you get.

- I used to fill my A3 TDI once a month and now i fill the Cupra every 2 weeks just over that.
- A3 TDI gave me 420 miles to a full tank and the Cupra gives me about 280 miles.
- A3 TDI mpg was around 40-45 and the Cupra does 27-30 driving nicely around town to and from work.

If MPG is a conern - get a diesel

Why people buy a Cupra to pootle around, trying to get 30+ MPG bewilders me

Lol we've had this discussion before

Some people are weird

Fair enough comparing an FR TFSI to a cupra

Or a CR140 to a CR170

But comparing petrol to a diesel?? Weird as fook

Not really. If MPG is a concern it doesn't necessarily mean 'get a diesel'. I also had the choice of buying an M3 and MPG was my slight concern especially coming from a diesel. This is why i moved away from looking at M3's and started looking at Cupra K1's. Some people are still after decent fuel economy plus great performance which the Cupra can obviously handle very well indeed.

Yeah, comparing a v6 to a 2.0T is a good comparison.....

OK, you clearly didn't understand what i wrote. I was simply showing concerns for mpg does not mean you have to buy a diesel. I'd rather have my Cupra K1 doing 27 mpg than an E46 doing 18-19mpg.

Yes I do understand.

That is the exact same comparison of a cupra to a diesel

Therefore, it's a load of shite

I've questioned this before but always get a lot of people being really defensive about it.

The comparison that the OP is wanting is a very odd one though.

But as I'm here I'll type something

1) what MPG would I expect to get with mixed road driving on a Cupra petrol and what would i get with the TDI? = Cupra mixed ~25mpg - TDI no idea 8000MPG

2) Is the Cupra a much better car? = define "better car"?

3) Any known issues or things to watch out for or either? = Nothing really, for the most part they are very solid cars with reliable engines.

4) Do they handle high millage well as I want to keep the car for around 4 years = yes

Consumption all depends how you drive it. if you drive an FR diesel like you stole it and a Cupra like Miss Daisy then , realistically, you'd probably achieve the same mileage. Quite why the fk you'd have a Cupra and not drive it as it was meant to be is a real mystery, like having Cameron Diaz as your girlfriend then giving yourself a hand job every night.
If you want decent fuel economy buy a moped, eat lentils and hug trees. If you want to warm up the seas a bit, kill some stinky flea ridden bears and have a bloody good laugh, buy a Cupra.

Having a Cupra (or any performance car) does not mean you have to drive it like you stole it all the time though.... I know it is not a Cupra, but I can get over 30mpg from mine fairly easily by driving normally. No point ragging it on a motorway or round town anyway, just get speeding fines and won't get anywhere quicker anyway. Save the fuel for the back road blast!

Get the Cupra....

Cupraaaa. I can very realistically get over 30mpg out of my R if I drive around sensibly. Not even Ms Daisy. Hell, I can even get 30 when I occasionally give it the beans. It's not an Evo or Scooby. TFSI is quite good for performance/economy

I just averaged over 30mpg on a recent 900mile trip Gateshead>Alton Towers>Plymouth>Gateshead.
Obviously consisting of all sorts of roads and levels of loud pedal volume :) Wasnt being ultra careful or anything.

That was using V-max.

The first 150 miles back from buying it in Grimsby using council unleaded, I could not hit 30, plus the car didnt feel anywhere near as 'perky' as it does on super.

I get 45-50 in my CR170 FR driving normally and 36-40 if pushed hard. Very very rare it will drop below 35 even if you tear it everywhere.

A few of the lads did a run the other month and it was around 60mile ish and was driving on national speed 'limit' roads and it didn't go below 35 however if you ask crafoo his mpg was probably more 25mpg.

Infact don't ask him because he will say I wasn't bothered about mpg so didn't look. Lol.

The cupra is completely different and a turbo petrol will always rule a turbo diesel.

If you can afford the extra petrol costs then defo go cupra if not get a diesel map it to 210bph and get a nippy diesel.
