Which tyres ??

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a little bit of advice please. I recently purchased a 65' 1.4 FR Eco TSI which I absolutely love. I'm needing to change the two front tyres, (not my driving, was a bit low when I bought it). Currently on the front are Pirelli's 225/45 ZR17 94Y and on the back are Dunlops 225/45 R17 91W. Do you suggest Dunlops so I have the same all round or would you recommend keeping with Pirelli's or some other tyre? I'm not a long distance driver and the car is mainly used on A & B roads probably covering about 8 to 10,000 miles per year.

Just put two Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres on my wife’s Ibiza 1.4 FR - it’s transformed the steering feel and grip over the crummy Bridgestones that were on there before. You’ll pay around £120 each but worth it, especially as you drive on A and B roads.

As for keeping same tyres all round, I wouldn’t worry. I had a mix of Continental and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres whilst moving to the Michelin’s all round on my Golf R and didn’t have any issues - just have to be mindful of the different grip levels until you have a full set of whatever tyres you go for.

Just put two Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres on my wife’s Ibiza 1.4 FR - it’s transformed the steering feel and grip over the crummy Bridgestones that were on there before. You’ll pay around £120 each but worth it, especially as you drive on A and B roads.

This! I've had to buy Uniroyals for my Cupra due to them being cheaper (19" are expensive) and the mileage I was doing. But next time I'm just going to suck it up and buy the PS4s.

The PS4S is close to £200 per corner on my Golf but the grip is fantastic and I refuse to compromise on tyres as they’re the only thing between me and a hedge!

I had them on my FR+ (18") and loved them! But as you say, not much change from £800 and I got through a set of front tyres every 12 months. So I went with the Rainsport 3s at half the price. But now I'm doing 2000k a year, I can afford to splash out and have them last me 3-4 years.

There are two tyres the Michelin PS4 and the Michelin PS4S and there is a big difference in price.

PS4 around £120 each
PS4S around £160 each

Both plus fitting cost.

Most Cupra drivers install PS4S but personally I’d go for the PS4 on your car.

Not sure that PS4S are available in 17" (or even 18" for that matter).

PS4 would be a good choice though.

I would get the new good tyres put on the back and have the Dunlops put on the front. Go crazy for a few months to burn through them and then get another pair of Michelins to go on the back.

This is my 2nd set on the Cupra. They perform really well in the wet. I push the car quite hard (especially cornering) and they haven't let me down yet. Price / performance I'd highly recommend them.

Yeah, it's the rainsport 3. You start out at 8mm of tread. I've been told the PS4s start out at 6.7mm. I've done 11k miles on the fronts so far. I'll need to check the depth but they are nowhere near the wear indicators yet. I tend to get double out the rears.

You don't drive hard enough . I put a new set of Uniroyal Rainsports on last year and I think it's a great tyre, but after 11K miles my fronts are down to 3mm and 3.5 mm and the backs are about 5.5mm. Since I'm just waiting for my new car to be delivered I've rotated the tyres and I reckon they should easily last me out now.

I got four Michelin PS4 18s for £394 fully fitted from Black Circles with the £40 off promotion when you buy 4 which seems constantlly on - plus £7.88 back when ordered through topcashback...great tyres!

RS3s good in cold temps but they are really a mid range tyre.

Best to stick with Michelin, Goodyear or Conti

Love the tyre threads on internet forums:

There is a definate bias towards Michelin’s PS4 and/or PS4S on this board (hence this is what you will be recommended), whereas the Briskoda Octavia threads for the same 17”/18”/19” tyre sizes will be biased towards the Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 2 or 3, albeit the switch to PS4/PS4S is starting to build up momentum.

I’ve had Continental SC5s on the FR (150 ps) throughout the summer for the past 5 years and can’t really fault them; even when I push hard, they don’t really lose traction until down to 2-3 mm, and by that stage I’m generally getting ready for new rubber. I also have SC5s on the Cupra and again, have only lost traction once momentarily, with 4 wheel drift on a wet greasy road when I was driving way too enthusiastically.

Agree with Hazkirby above - you get what you pay for, especially with the premium brands.

Don’t get me started on Winter Tyres though - bought a cheap set of Kumhos on the recommendation of the tyre fitter last year (and I had run their summer tyres previously a few years ago and was impressed); not bad in snow but absolutely awful in the dry/wet - can’t wait for them to wear out, and seriously considering cutting my losses! Continental, Bridgestone, Vredestein, Kleber, Hankook all used during the past decade and significantly better winter tyres.

Or maybe we've tried loads of different tyres and concluded which we like best. I've personally used Bridgestone twice (and hated both). Firestone (what was I thinking?). Uniroyal three times now (good for the price). PS3s and PS4s (my favourite). I've not tried the AS4s so couldn't say one way or the other.
