Hi all,

I'm going to uprate the brakes on a Leon 110 TDi (280mm front brake discs), and am wondering what people think is the best option?

- I was originally thinking Black Diamond grooved discs with Black Diamond Predator pads.

(Was thinking 12 groove discs rather than 6 groove with the discs - what's the difference in performance though?)

But then I read (on here) that the Predator pads were poor, and that Ferodo DS2500 pads would be much better.

The Black Diamond discs seem to have a good rep though, but I've also seen that people on here are getting eliptically grooved front discs from Badger5 (in conjunction with DS2500 pads).

So, which would be the best option please?

(I'm also aware of EBC Yellows, etc, but am not sure whether they'd be my best option, and I don't want anything colourful, as trying to keep discrete, standard look to car)

Many thanks and all the best

Hi m8,

The reason is because then I think I'd have to increase the size of the wheels (currently 15") to 17" or so, and insurance company say the uprated brakes are ok if on standard size alloys, but increased alloys bumps up the premium, so it's not worth it, and the 280's will still give great stopping ability I'm sure.

Cheers

If you have 280mm brakes then you can't do the 312 mod without changing the hubs as the slides are part of it.

I'd avoid EBC stuff as it's got itself a bad rep recently, you can't go wrong with good old DS2500s.

Performance wise you'll see the best results from the pads.

If you want drilled/grooved discs I'd have a look at Mtec100 on eBay - cheap and good quality.

Hi and thanks MJ,

I had a look at Mtec100's eBay shop, but it seems the only front brake discs they've got for the Leon 110 TDi are drilled grooved, and I don't want drilled discs as I've seen Badger5's comment that he won't sell them because they can crack.

Re: Ferodo DS2500s - do these fit these onto standard calipers, or do the calipers need uprating too?

Also, any thoughts on EBC Ultimax discs? Any good for Leon 110? Better/worse than Black Diamond's 12 groove or Badger5's eliptically grooved discs?

Thanks in advance

I'm also slightly concerned about the DS2500s for moderate road use - I don't brake that hard usually on normal roads, so am wondering if these will be the best type for me.

I know they're the best, but are they 100% right for me?

One guy on here said it was 'scary' driving his family around town with them on and that they're not for everyone, with Badger5 blasting him as a bu11shitter as DS2500s are good when cold too.

By following the run-in instructions supplied by Ferodo, and getting some good discs to go with them, I'd hope that they'd be good for moderate road use..

i no this is bit of a arsy thing to say but if you dont normally brake that hard why upgrade? and the drilled disks will only crack if your seriously straining them e.g track days.

Hi Bubba,

The brake discs need replacing anyway, and I'd rather get uprated discs and pads than get standard ones on it again.

The reason is increased stopping ability if I need it, especially since the car is remapped to stage 1: I'll be using the uprated brakes beyond the capabilities of the standard ones, and so with more power, it makes sense to have better brakes, as the standard ones would probably struggle to cope under heavy breaking after hitting full remapped boost in 2nd & needing to stop quickly for something!

Cheers

cool, look at hub carriers and brake caliper carriers from r32 as they will be 312mm and very good calipers...dont forget to spray them!
