Hi guys,is it likely that my TDi FR150 has this 'box aswell? Mine's over 100k but in the time Ive had it has always had some gearbox whine! May look at doing this one weekend if it's nice and easy

If you can to an oil change then you can do the shim. (if you have the tools) I have a FR+ 150 and just did mine, so you should have the same gearbox.

No garage iv asked will do the shim for me so I'm tackling it myself on the weekend, just watched the video on YouTube does the snap ring go behind the shim? On top of it or in front of it?

Got the same issue with my '04 FR TDi with the 6-speed gearbox. Been whining on the overrun since I got it. No other adverse effects though.

Good to know there's a cheap & easy fix - going to have a go if I can...

I did mine without taking the wheel off but it was in the air so the wheel dropped down away from the box. Need to turn the wheel left. I imagine it would be easier with the wheel off but my car was already in the air on axle stands for something else and I couldnt be bothered putting it down again. Still only took 15 mins.

first check the axial play as per the video - if the shaft doesn't move in and out then you don't need to (and won't be able to) fit the shim.

But basically you remove the snap ring, then put the shim in - push it in as far as it goes, behind where the snap ring goes. Then put the snap ring back, on the outside of the shim. You may need to pull the shaft out as it's quite easy to push in whilst trying to re-fit the snap ring again and you lose the groove

I tried to mine the other day but the snap ring is well and truly stuck and there isn't any play like you said. Is there sonething can do or is it a no go?

Where is a safe place to use a trolly Jack on my car? If read it will bend the sill??

How many bolts are holding on the gard blocking the gearbox? I couldn't get past it so gave up until I know more information??

The engine undertray? 3 philips screws at the front, and maybe 10 torx bolts? The wheel arch liner gets in the way a bit especially trying to hammer the new black cover back on. I jacked mine on the large bolt that attaches the subframe to the car, and then got the axle stands under.

Ye which ever bit is right in front of the gear box as you look at it from the wheel I could find 2 trod bolts 1 right in front of ya an one underneath but the one underneath seems to be rounded of so I struggled with it an had to give up any suggestions??

So it is safe to use a trolly Jack? I will put some wood on top of it so its not metal on metal, I was going to do it on the jacking point behind the plastic cap that pops out is this the correct place?

I'm pretty new to the Leon but yeah that should be ok - at least, I jacked mine on that lumpy bit with a piece of wood

Lads anyone have a part number for the shim guna order it there now?

Shim is WHT-001-976
Cover is O2M-301-211B (you will knacker the old one removing it)

cost £4.19 for the shim, £4.14 for the cover from my local Seat dealers

do you still have the service manual? there should be a sticker on the inside of the front cover with your engine and gearbox code. FZQ can benefit from this shim

Yeah just checked the manual I have the fzq box have the bits ordered so I'll post up how I got on when I have the parts in the car cheers lads

Just got the bits for this job. Shim is very thin - maybe 1mm or less. Can't see how it will make much difference to the end float of the shaft but I guess I'll have to try it and see.

User's manual has jacking points in it? I have an FR and there are removable sections of the plastic side trims maybe 50mm behind the front wheels and about 100mm in front of the rears and I guess the jacking locations are the same for all Mk 1 Leons.

I always use a block of wood on top of the jack, just make sure it's thick enough not to break and preferably align the grain of the wood at 90° to the side of the car for the same reason as there's a raised metal flange running along the car from front to rear which could split the wood (mine's already been flattened by some careless jacking )
