White/blue smoke at idle

Right I have just had a full engine rebuild and new turbo 300miles into running it in I'm getting White/blue smoke only at idle and a strong oil burning smell in the cabin only on idle. Car boosts and runs fine no smoke on driving. Anyone have any ideas.

As I just said to AlexGSI that blue smoke indicates turbo oil seals, you have a new turbo so it shouldn't be that - you normally see it when boosting too... White smoke in this weather I would put down to condensation. How did you run the engine in?

I did 100 miles at little boost to 2.5rpm the 100-200 miles same to 3.5 then 300 miles half boost to 4k. It's defo a while oil smell car runs fine just smells could it be the Icy weather

Mine blue smoked a little when I hit max boost thismorning, didnt do it after a while though - I hadnt gone into positive boost for a few days so im thinking it may just be a slight buildup of oil along the IC pipework & the TIP.

Have you checked your TIP & Intercooler pipework for oil?

Could be oil getting past the rings? I know you have had a few issues in the past with that engine.

Yer I haven't had the best of luck I'm going to go check the pipes and tip now compression test is in order.

Right guys is this possible lots of water in the tailpipe I have a decat. Could it be water soaking up crap and oil in the pipe and as it warms up the White/blue smoke is made. I say this as when I start my car from cold the first min I get nothing totaly clear? Shot in the dark maybe.

What oil have you put in after rebuild ?

Ik had that same problem, going from castroll Edege 5w50 to Kendall Elite 5w50. Smoking bleu when idling, not while driving (My engine did 55.000 kms). Put back Castroll Edge 5w30 problem solved

Maybe its the solution.

Update it's somthing more serious than I thought car is off the road lots of blue smoke oil in the tail pipe I'm just praying it's my turbo seals

Are you getting excessive blow-by?
(Air from the oil filler when the cap is removed & engine running)

Yes it blows pretty hard when caps off the cap can acturly float it blows hard. What does that mean? I also have a nice puddle of oil in my intercooler pipe. Turbo I hope I can't aford to get the engine apart again. I'm truly stressed out

Ill try and explain as best I can;

Blow-by is when exhaust gas slips past the piston rings due to the pressure in the cylinder.
This exhaust gas then enters the crankcase and causes abit more pressure than usual - which is noticeable when the oil filler cap is removed.

You will notice some pressure from the oil filler cap - this is normal, but its when its excessive then you know there are problems - usually helps identify weather or not the piston rings are past it or not.

Oil in the inter-cooler pipe work would suggest turbo seals.

Pressure test the cylinders, then you will have a bit more idea on where the problem may lie.

thanks for the info alex im getting a pressure test done in the week and also get the turbo checked out im just hoping its nothing really serious like another bottom end rebuild.

It shouldn't be that serious - if the piston rings haven't seated properly then it's a case of getting new ones (JE are ~£150) deglazing the bores again and running them in. Best of luck.

Update long story short when running the engine in my rocker cover breather pipe kinked up causing huge oil pressure and blew the head gasket

At least it's nothing too major then! Get on to David at SERE motors - he'll get you the best deal for a nre head gasket and bolts.

i have already got the parts sorted. im hoping its just the head gasket it failed a sniff test within a second. head comes off in a few days see what damage has been done fingers crossed as always. i really dont have much luck with this car.

Done well, check the head for warping with a feeler gauge and straight edge.
