This is the fuel filter from my car which I changed today, it certainly diddnt look like it had been changed in a very long time going but the amount of dirt and crud on the outside, it was a genuine filter, but i have no history of it ever being changed.

That's nasty! Shame on you!

Quietly goes off to look on eBay for a fuel filter.....

Are they hard to change?

Ha, I've only had the car a month and it wasbthe last bit of general maintenence I had to do.

Mine was a ballache to change as the plastic clips had siezed and were a struggle to get off and even harder to put back on, but I really dont think mine had been done in a very long time going by how hard it was to get off, I change these filters quite regularly on various cars and mine has been the worst in a long time, I even have some special pliers specifically for the clips and they usally work first time, on mine, no chance, a 5 minute job turned into an hour

I do mine every 20000 miles and also do cabin filter and air filter at the same time. I always pre-fill the fuel filter with clean diesel even though I don't think you have to on these cars.
I think for the £8 cost of the filter and 10 minutes it takes it's crazy not to do it.

-Jack up the rear and put it on a axle stand (only driver's side is enough).
-Unclip the jubilee clip.
-Have the new filter ready
-Unclip the front hose and put it on the new filter
-Cap off the front of the old filter
-Unclip the back hose and put it on new filter
-Cap off the back of the old filter
-Pour the contents of the old petrol filter in the fuel flap (open it first :p )
-Discard of the old filter
-Fasten jubilee clip on the new filter
-Start car and check for leaks
-Put your car on the ground

There is a more extensive guide which drains the fuel pipes first (disconnect fuse of the fuel pump and let your car die), but I dont think thats necessary.

Nope, definitely failed MOT on it.

MOT states "Check for leaks in the fuel system both with and without the engine running."

They never said, just that needed replacing. They're thorough lads!

Thorough lads? More like robbing bass turds

Hahahah thats why I go to an independent MOT tester (MOT test only). Not a garage which also does MOT, as I think they will always try to fix something for you, what you dont need.

MOT test only checks what is necessary to pass the test, nothing more nothing less.

This is in the NL btw, dont know how the procedures are in UK.

I though I would check mine today and surprise surprise it was the original from 2004 and was black inside!!
So much for seat servicing!!

Swap about every 2 years on my VRS, if Seat anything like Skoda, they only change fuel filters on Diesels, no recommended intervals on Petrol's, not sure what Audi or VW state for petrol filters.
