Hi all

Recently bought myself a 2009 1.9 TDI Ecomotive SE. Love it to bits and really chuffed with it as a whole.

Two things i've noticed and i'd like to fix if possible.

1. When I put the front/rear windscreen wipers on + squirt the water there is an immediate burning/mouldy smell, but the wipers work fine and the water squirts out fine. Anyone know what this could be?

2. This one will be a little more difficult to explain, the driver rear passenger door doesn't sound right when you shut it. The rest of the doors make a distinct and healthy shutting sound, but the driver rear sounds as if its catching onto something and makes a completely different thud when it shuts. It still shuts and locks fine, it's just the noise thats irritating me.

I can take a video if needed to show the difference in sound and what happens when I put the wipers on.

Any advice appreciated :)

1. Would you say that burning/mouldy smell could be slightly eggy smell as well?, if so you need to drain the system of liquid and put some kind of dish washer or anti bacterial/bleach into it to kill the bacteria/fungi or whatever it is and empty again and fill the system again. You can get good cleaning liquids from halfords etc that can kill it.

I'm not 100% sure, i'll put the wipers on when I go to work tomorrow and check again. Would ordinary fairy washing up liquid do the job? I assume it's just the washscreen bottle that I need to drain and refill?

Sounds like old/smelly washer fluid. I can smell the washer fluid if I use it on my car.

I'd recommend screen wash which is anti bacterial and also prevents the washer fluid from freezing in winter, if the correct ratio is used. I'm sure I saw the large 5 litre bottles at ASDA or Halfrauds recently, might be premixed

In my old Leon, the water had gone off, smelt freakin' awful. I just removed the plug from the reservoir and rinsed it through, topped up and it was fine after that.

I wouldn't use fairy liquid mate. I used Miltons sterilising fluid and some tap-hot water when my old Focus had this. Leave the mix in there as a replacement for proper washer fluid, and then top it up as normal when it's empty.

Thanks for the advice guys, I haven't done anything to it but it appears to have gone away. I'm guessing it just hadn't been used in a while and i forced the crappy mould out
