Hi

Im after getting my front windows tinted:D

Now before the righteous get involved and say its ilegal well its my car and i know the concinqueses.

so with that out of the way its down to the question bit.

I recently had my car booked into my local car stereo dealership and when the window tinter ( specialist call in ) came to do the job he said he was unable to do it because the door guides needed to be completely taken apart to remove the window and it was too much of a job for them to do.

Now i know some people have had it done but has anyone had it done on an Altea or Leon as just because someone cant be bothered to strip the door down doesn't mean it cant be done.

So who's had it done or who do you know who can do the job.

Answer's on a post card to Seat Cupra.net.

no seriously i would like to get this done.

cheers

My windscreen is cracked, and yesterday the guy from National Windscreens said he couldn't do it easily, and has had to re-book it so 2 of them can have a go.. Plus he showed me the tool he would have had to use, and there is no way he could have done it without scratching the bodywork paint along the top of the screen.

Why do they make it so difficult?

Find someone who knows how to remove a windscreen without damaging your car then!!! this muppet is clearly nothing more than that!!! If he doesn't know about removing windscreens that are tight to the body (which is most modern cars) then he shouldn't be getting your work!!

If he has never seen an a leon windscreen before, and has to call in help, then he will also damage the wiper mechanism (the passenger wiper has a reverse thread nut holding the wiper arm on) by shearing the thread on the spindal. This requires a new mechanism, along with a dealer re-set of the wipers. Ask him what he knows about these cars before you let him near yours....please.

sorry iv misled you all

its not the windscreen its the front side windows that im looking to get tinted

so they match the factory tint of the rear & side rear windows of the car.

iv learnt that its a very popular accessory as with most new cars coming with the rear of the car tinted from factory.

and its a must for me as my route to work in the mornings and coming home in the evening the Sun shines directly through the side window and into my eyes and with the door being so long the Sun visor doesn't extend long enough to block the sun out! ( makes driving very orkward )

Sorry that's my fault for going off thread..

If you just need the fronts tinting then they don't need to remove the door panel fully to remove the glass ( I'm sure most places tint the windows in situ). They just need to pop off the fabric part of the door trim to reveal the clamps holding the glass in place.

Can you tell I work in automotive glazing??

I've tried fitting film once before, and it ended up having more bubbles than an aero on a particulally bubbly day

Have a word with the tinters and let them know it's not as difficult as they thought, because you don't actually need to remove the door panel as a whole (which is a difficult job) just the fabric section which is on clips.

had mine done too, match the rears almost perfectly, windows were removed to do the job properly. took him 2.5hrs to do i think.even did the wee a pillar window.

I tinted both the front and rear windows of my leon based on advice from AR-CoolC, He really isn't kidding..

Pop off the door handle trim (prise off from sides)
Remove the bit with the window switch (prise up)
Remove the fabric panel (prise out using flat table knives, bit make sure not to whack the glass as the clips pop out)
Disconnect the handle cable and tweeter and then all you have to do is wind the window to a point where you can see the two bolts and loosen them off being careful not to fully undo them.
If you pull the window frame rubber off carefully the window will just lift out.
I found it easier also to remove the lower strip to make refitting easier.

I had a guide on-line but the host site is down, but if you want i will email it to you. It has pics and full walk through of taking out the rear glass.. the front is just the same!

Out of interest does anyone know what percentage is the tint in the rear of the new Leon's as standard from the factory. I know the percentage works on the amount of light it let's through and is almost in reverse to what you think if you know what I mean???

Not sure about the back but I have tinted my fronts to 35% which is the closest match i could get to the back windows in the FR.

k4ith, no that wouldn't have been me.. not been down there for a while.

Since this is a post about tints though I'll shamelessly pimp my efforts at DIY tints..

35% VLT on the fronts 20% VLT on the rear
