Wipers not working on fastest speed setting

I've had a search but can't find anything relevant. While driving home last night I realised my wipers do not work on the fastest setting or continuous as the manual calls it.

All other functions work fine like the washwipe, intermittant settings and normal speed and one off wipe.

The car is 2009 and doesnt have auto wipers. Is there any known problems on these cars which always seem to fail like the relay or wiper stalk etc which I should visit first?

It is dangerous to just dive in, but there have been many reports it seems across the Polo/Ibiza/Fabia's of this common platform having ended up with faulty stalk controls.

The usual issue tends to be either not switching on or never switching off.

Thanks. I guess it would be handy to get hold of a known working stalk and try that.
