The new tyres are now on the back becasue originally i though it was them, but to be honest it happens with the both sets, so realy thats out of the question i think.

I don't hear any rotational noises when moving, drove round with the window open all day Sunday and din't hear anything.

When braking lightly it does seem to have much affect, when i'm braking is heavier it sakes a bit more and the shaking stops when it goes down past 50-55 mph! I don't have any shaking at all up until 55 - 60!

Withthe weights SEAT used knock on ones last week and it hardly made a difference at dispite them telling me they were out and yesterday when i was driving to work i think i hear one ping off and hit the underside of the car . . . i didn't hit any pot holes and it was a flat, smooth road.

Dep down i think it could have something to do with the steering wheel or steering rack area!

To be honest I'd be very surprised if it was the steering wheel.

The reason I ask about the weights is that a lot of weights in one area can indicate an imbalance in the wheel be it through a buckle or whatever. on a balancer the wheel would look spot on, but drive down the road and it will shake.
This can also be caused by the imbalance of the wheel and the imbalance of the tyre acting on the same point of the wheel, in which case the tyre should be turned through 180 on the wheel rather than counteracting it with weights.

If you are able to get somebody to raise the car on a ramp so the wheels are off the floor, switch off the traction control if fitted and run the car up to 70 mph and see if its noticably one wheel more than the other or anything.

So many places have badly calibrated equipment, so no matter how many times they check the wheels they will still vibrate. The ONLY place that I have full confidence in is Wheels In Motion in Chesham. People travel up to 60 miles to go here for full alignment, chassis and balancing issues... I don't know how far it is for you, but if you ever pass by I would HIGHLY recommend it as I'm 100% sure it would get fixed.

Just a liitle update to keep all you interested people informed, lol!

Got in touch with a bloke that i use to work with who has a Cupra TDI and he has agreed to swap alloys with me to see if it is the alloy and wheel issue. So i'll be having a nice set of MK5 R32 Reps on for a day or two soon.

I really hope this is the reason because it would be simple to sort out, if it doesn't sort it at least it's another thing done and crossed of the list . . . . then on to the next thing to do!!

i dont know if this is of any use i had ford orion ten years ago that did this and eventualy after loads of bad diagnosis from various garages we found the dif had gone in the gearbox hope its not that mate sounds pricey !!

this may be a long shot but my mate had a 306 a few years ago with the same problem... it turned out to be faulty tyres!!!! put a new set on and all is fine
apparantly sometimes you get faulty treads on them?

one other thing that may not of been mentioned but I hope was obvious to check is that all your wheel nuts for all wheels are nice and tight?

D Day . . . . LOL!!

Had the day off today, to go and see my mate who i used to work with, who has another Cupra TDI. We swaped front wheels and i tokk the car for a spin and to be honest withyou it seemed to do the triick! The steering firmed up and didn't feel flimsey. The shaking on the steering wheel carmed down a lot, so i think the next step is to buy some new alloys!!

My mate did offer to have my car back to look at the drive shafts, to check them in a couple of weeks, which i'm going to take him up on!

The next thing is which alloys do i get, the MK5 R32 alloys looked really sweet on the car but i do like the new S3 alloys which are about?

Just want to check is the Offset and PD . . . ET35, 5x110 or 5x112??

Are you 100% sure yours cant be fixed with new tyres or balancing the wheels first? Otherwise, I've seen LCR alloys on ebay but they're not cheap.

The wheels and tyres that are on there have been balanced and tracked about 4 times since the beginning of January!!

get the wheels put on the balancer without tyres and see how far out they are.
You still haven't said how Much weight has been put on the wheels to balance them, I know they've been balanced 4 times but If the tyres set wrong or the wheel is far out then it can be balanced with enough weight but will give bad shaking.
