Worried about my cambelt

i brought my car 10months ago the bloke i brought it from sed the cambelt had been changed but its only writted in biro at the top of the service book so im a little worried he just fobbed me off... is there anyway i can check to see if it has/need doing as i dont really have the funds to pay to have it done... i would like to attempt it myself and i have a haynes... but ive been told nast stories that ive i dont line everything up ill be looking at a new engine! :(

Of course you can check it, but as they normally say if you are paying for a check then you may as well replace the lot as the labour for checking is almost the same as replacement.

Sorry i should have made myself more clear is there a way i can check it myself? is it a thing i should try to DIY?

You can check it yourself but if you don't know a bad conditon cambelt from a good one or a knackered tensioner from a good one then there is no point you checking. You might as well then get it changed.
