Yellow/Whity Sutt on Oil Cap = Bad???

My water temp light often flashes red in the morning, have to restart engine to stop it - don't know if this has anything to do with it
the water temp light flashing in the morning is fairly common, mine does it too. the way to fix that is to scrape the prongs in the coolant tank as they get layered with crud which stops them sensing properly.
if is is head gasket it will not be a cheap fix, however as DK says it could be condensation, particularly at this time of year - somehow water is mixing with your oil, that is for sure.

Your temp light is litterally your temp light warning you that its below 0. I have had this a few times this month. I understand its ok if its on the bottom of your cap, its when its further down in the filler channel that you need to worry about it. Do you do alot of short Journeys or start stops?
yea looks pretty normal mate. short trips about and low grade oil can cause this.
keep an eye on your water level aswell make sure its up to the line
Try disconnecting your wiring plug to the top of the water bottle get a thin flat screw driver and scrap at the metal terminals on the top of the bottle and spray WD40 in there i filled mine up with WD40 and then replaced the plug never seen flashing red light again

That would make sense - been doing lots of short trips recently - and had the car serviced 2 months ago; they probably put crappy oil in

Back in October, whilst doing all my usual checks before a long drive, I checked the oil. It was showing just over 1/2 on the dip stick so I thought I'd put a drop in to top it up. When I took the cap off 
Thought the worst! Looked a bit like the photo's, but not quite as bad. I had a good check around the bay for leaks, started her up to check for smoke or excessive condensation... nothing. I thought about it for a while, and decided it must be just condensation / moisture. My daily commute is only about 15 miles each way, local supermarket is about 10 miles, missus doesn't drive, so frequent trips to town & railway station about a mile away... basically, I mainly do short journeys now, since the missus moved up here (used to do about 800 motorway miles a week before!). Anyway, I cleaned off the muck, topped up the oil and off I went. Checked again once I got where I was going (just over 100 miles) and it was fine. Checked again when I got back home, again, it was fine. Checked a few times since, still looking good
Basically, if you can't see / hear / smell anything obviously wrong, and you mainly do short journeys - go for a long drive, clean out the cobwebs & get her up to temperature for a while
P.S. The beeping coolant thing is very common, as already mentioned. There are ways to get around it... switch off & re-start, scrape the sensor prongs etc. (although I've not heard the WD40 one before ) but a new expansion tank (sensor is part of the tank) costs less than a tenner and fitting is a quick DIY job.
Also, the Seat Specialist where my car is serviced uses Quantum Synta G0ld, I use it for topping up as well. While it may not be the best money can buy, it certainly isn't cheap crap.
P.P.S. Why can't I write G0ld? Comes out as **** Not a new swear word I haven't caught onto yet is it?!

If you need a definate answer send me a sample of your used engine oil (100mls).
I'll test it for sodium content, which will tell you if you have a coolant leak.

Slightly off topic, but as stated I currently use Quantum Synta G0ld... can you recommend a better oil, bearing in mind I do frequent short journeys and the occasional longer journey with medium - heavy loading? Would I be better off with Castrol Edge or Mobil1, or anything better than these? I currently have an inspection service every 12 months and I only do about 7k miles per year. Apparently, my local Audi dealer uses (or should I say, used... it's a while since I asked) Castrol Longlife III, and the service interval for the TT & S3 was 20k?
Would the Longlife III oil be ok, but with more frequent changes... although saying that, has it been replaced, as I can't find it anywhere?! I guess to a lot of people, oil is oil and grease is grease... but having worked at 3 different power stations over the past 14 years... the huge lubrication shedules we have for different applications / duties / loads / cycles / temperatures / bearing type / ambient conditions etc. is mind boggling!
(Is Castrol T46 any good for the LCR? Probably the best we have on site... lol)

You don't get a beep, clean the prongs in the header tank.
