Strange Rev Problem

I don't know if anyone else has suffered from this, but I have a bit of weirdness occuring!

When I'm in 4th or 5th gear at around 2k, and accelerate quite hard, The revs will climb to 2.75k quite rapidly, then drop back to about 2.5k before going up again quite steadily. It doesn't happen in 2nd, 3rd or 6th

I thought it was a bit of clutch slippage at first but I don't really know. I can pretty much get it do it on demand now. The cars a Cupra TDi 150.

Any ideas?!

Afraid I can't offer a solution but if you can reproduce on demand I reckon your best bet is to goto the dealer. If you can reproduce it they will find it hard to deny there's a problem!

I too get the same problem in a TDI 150. Between 2k and 3k in 4th, 5th and 6th. So far I've given the dealer video footage of this but they insist on driving to see it for themselves. I notice that this problem occurred 2 years ago. What was the outcome?

I solved the problem by selling the car!! I bought an FR TDi shortly after that post, and didn't egt the problem in that.

Sounds like clutch slip to me. At what rev range do you get maximum torque from a TDI? If it's around the 2000 to 3000 range that might be your problem.

thankfully I bought my FR from new... but I'll steer clear of secondhand tdi's!

I believe it's clutch slip too and think this is where peak torque will occur, but at only 19,000 on the clock I'm struggling to get the dealer to believe its a defect!!!! Next step is a 2day loan of my car so they can "diagnose" the problem... it's a 50/50 chance, as it seems to be intermittent. Thanks for your help though.

Its definitely clutch slippage.

You need it replacing sooner rather than later or you risk the flywheel also.

Its 150% slipping clutch, no doubts about it!

just to let anyone know who looks at this post for future reference.

The dealer did in-fact find a problem and replaced the clutch. flywheel and bearing under warranty. Apparently, VAG have had some issues with under-tolerance clutch springs, part-numbers have been up-issued (so they should have solved the problem) and so-far, no issues to report with the replacement.

Good luck to anyone fighting a dealer on a warranty claim!

how do u go about getting them to do it on warranty. my dealer just keeps kicking up a stink and saying clutch is a wearing component! av only has the car a month. the problem is it only happens maybe once a week if that! my warranty runs out in Dec so i could do with it sorting!!

and if you're local dealer is rusty's, then i'm sorry - truly sorry. I went in there for a test drive recently, they had no fuel in any of the cars, weren't prepared to put any fuel in them either.... anyway....

how many miles has it done? how old is the car? is the warranty the manufacturer's balance or dealer?

one of the better options can be to talk to Seat Customer Service centrally if you don't get any joy out of the dealers.

yer it is rustys!! they dont have a clue with anything!! i did not buy hr car from them tho! The car has only done 17000 miles. its a 54 plate so it is what has come with the car the warranty that is. its just someithing i am going to struggle to show because as i said it maybe only happens once or twice a week

you need to push them harder - mine only had 18,000 on the clock and kept slipping between 2000-3000 revs. it was a 6-speed box on a 150bhp engine. talk to them and tell them that you know other people have had the problem and that it's weak clutch-plate springs. Ask them in if the part-number for the clutch has ever been up-issued or if they could provide any info on techincal bulletins.

With the mileage as low as that, i'd be tempted to have a chat to Seat head-office.

by the way - my problem was more intermittent that that, but generally happenned when the engine was warm, but the clutch was cold. drive around very gently until the engine temp is warm, then change up into fourth on a level piece of road making sure you change into the 1800-2000rpm category, then floor it. i have mobile phone video if you need any more evidence.

been in two the garage 2day. sods law my car doesnt do it even tho it did it on the way to the garage!! can i PM you my e-mail address?? send me that Video? if you wouldnt mind? they are having my car monday and over night and tues. so they can take it for a run when it is cold on the tues morning. i would like the vid if ya wouldnt mind just to prove it happens.... might be better quility then mine!!
