has anyone else had a problem with their 1.9 diesel leon whistling? my car often sounds like an owl is stuck in the engine.

i have a 1.9tdi stylance and it whistles at certain speeds in different gears when the accelerator is pressed to a certain point. if i hold it at the point the whistling is continuous but it is quite hard to do, otherwise its a short whistle.

i took my car car to a seat service centre to check it and they said it was normal for a turbo to whistle but i have been in other diesel cars that make no such noises, in fact the old leon with the same engine makes no such noise.

anyone had this problem before or any ideas?

yes i know what you mean. i have the 2.0tdi and it is very noticeable. the noise is not the usual turbo whistle, it is owl like. my wifes 1.9tdi has also started to do it as well but to a lesser degree. you are not alone mate.

I have to admit when someone asked ths before I was quick to say its just turbo.. however i too occasionaly hear an owly noise thats not a turbo spool noise. Mostly when im crawling in 1st and giving a little gas to pull away. Its not something i can recreate though. (2.0 TDI)

Yep , FR TDI I get this in 1st sometimes - not all the time though

thanks for the replies, at least im not going mad!

trouble is the problem doesnt happen all the time, last time i took it in for a check it was ok. i think i am going to take it in on the way to work as i work near smc windsor, although they are rubbish, on a day it is happening and let them try to con me into believing that is what it is meant to do.

if it doesnt get sorted i will seriously think about changing my car as either the car is broken or its a design flaw, and seat dont seem too fussed about doing anything about it.

I've got 26k now run up on my 2.0tdi sport, the whistle has been noticable from new (March 06). Initially I was slightly concerned about it, was assured that it was'nt a problem by Seat and now I've even grown to almost like it! (What sound does an Owl make that resembles a whistle anyway? We don't have many owls in Gillingham!!!).If you think the whistle is bad you should hear the noise from the BMW 1 series diesel British Touring car. Now that is a whistle and a half!!!!

Has anyone got this resolved yet?
This is exactly the same problem that I have had from new (15k now) & its still doing it, hard to replicate this to a dealer though.
Surely it can't be normal as it doesn't do it all the time

Anyone?
Is this the "mooing" noise that others are experiencing?
Is it worth mentioning the boost valve to the dealer, the noise is really starting to get on my nerves tbh

if it was a loose manifold people would experience loss of boost and it would sound like a fluttering crisp packet, so i cant see that being the case

i know that some vag cars use to get fluttering diveter valves due to the standard ones being gash but thats on petrols, maybe there is something similar on the 2.0tdi that causes the same problem, not 100% sure on turbo diesels setups despite owning a diesel lol

I also get this on my 56 plate 2.0 TDi Stylance. It intermittently occurs when chaging gear, while depressing the clutch.

It is like an Owl noise!

Do I just mention the N75 valve to the dealer, will they know what I am talking about?
Not sure if this is related but I also get a slight hesistation, more noticeable when driving at say 70mph, when I ease off the accelerator & then press the pedal again it hesitates.......has happened since new and dealer hasn't been able to resolve it, are the two issues related?
Going in for a 20k service soon so would appreciate some ammo to go with

Did anyone ever find out for sure what was going on with this noise?

My 1.9TDi did it this afternoon on the M25, after running at constant revs (approx 2100rpm) for a few minutes.

I thought I could also feel a grinding through the steering wheel, that didn't feel like the normal road rumble.

Is this normal for this engine, or is it indicative of a fault or damage?

The car's only got 500 miles on the clock so far.

I have a new Leon Stylance 1.9tdi and have the same noise. tbh I thought it was was just a 'characteristic of the car' although thinking back I didnt notice it on the two cars I test drove. It seems to happen under light throttle acceleration or when holding the throttle steady at low revs.

Perhaps a poll could be in order to see if its a universal thing or if its only affecting some?.

I too have a similar noise in a 2008 1.9Tdi (105bhp) Leon, with 2500 miles on the clock.....bought it last week. The car is quiet for the first few minutes of driving, the the faint moo starts, but only on a very light throttle! Has anyone had any luck with a repair??

Thanks Wheelwright! Have noted part number and bulletin....will call with dealer in morning, description fits my symptoms exactly.....Geoff

Just left my car (105bhp Stylance) in to garage to have noise investigated.....not looking promising, initial comment was "they all do that sir", dealers dont seem to know anything about a fix for it!:(

am laughing here, i have had my tdi for 2 weeks and it does exact the same noise,am told its the turbo it ticks over slowly all the time. twit!! ta woo!!! lol
