Makes getting new insurance difficult as you can't say "no" to the "have you every been declined or had insurance cancelled".

Even if you do say you've never been declined insurance, most insurance companies these days submit your details to the CUE (Claims and Underwriting Exchange) database which any insurer who signs up to this can check. All the details about the what's, when's and whys will be on there so you are totally screwed either way.

Insurance companies and other agencies share information a lot more than people realise. And they are also very proactive in looking for information like this too.

Since starting work at the new place (third largest motor insurer in the country who also insure most other risks) it's bee a massive eye opener! What's been cool though, is even though I work in IT, I've been sent on various insurance training courses about everything from underwriting to fraud :)

After reading this thread I'm wondering if I'd need to tell my insurers about my LCR having blackened alloys? They are the standard ones but surely they're not this anal?

As somebody mentioned already, it is very much dependant on the insurer. Some will say it is a mod, some will say it's not a mod but they need to know as it changes the appearance of the car and others will say they don't need to know at all.

The only way of finding out is calling them and asking. Just tell them the wheels needed to be refurbished so you chose another colour at the same time, or this was the closest colour your bodyshop could get :)

Exhausts will affect the insurance, unless it is a standard replacement part. If the style of it changes or the sound changes, it's a mod and needs to be declared.

There are things you can do though....

Fabia rear wiper
Honda aerial
De-badge
SC.net sticker
Black S badge on front grill

That sort of thing is ok and doesn't need to be declared :)

Sorry working for a big ins co i can tell you De badging definatly has to be declared.

Again, depends on the insurance company. No company I've ever used has wanted to know, the insurance company I work for don't want to know, but at the same time, there are companies that do want to know. Which proves the point that, if in doubt, ask your insurance company.

i would agree it does vary from company to comopany, who do you work for RobM?

Fortis :)

We don't sell much direct, but underwrite a massive amount of policies for various companies, affinities and brokers (RIAS, Marks and Spencer, The AA, Age Concern etc etc)

fortis , cool they underwrite for us at Hastings Direct, now that we own Equity i think were going to be using them a lot though

Sorry to bring this thread back up but could you get your car remapped without telling the insurance company??? How would they be able to tell?

Really not worth it dude
I got a quote from my insurance company (HIC/Golf +) for a 50 BHP raise to my 210 BHP LCR and it was only £100 more for a year

but thats at your age with your NCB and your history! It's so variable with insurance companies.

just please dont start talking about REinsurance, thats a nightmare! Well it is from my POV anyway

Maybe it's the big Porsche brakes that keep the premium down for you :D

Seriously though, who did you get you insurance from (if you don't mind me asking?) my insurers stung me for double that when I declared a re-map and a new exhaust!!

Both mods only added about 51 horses to the output as well.

I put on new suspension, declared it to Adrian flux and there was no change in policy premium, nice.

I've just requested a quote from the same people actually.

I have only ~280 hp on my car and no crashes or claims - but 3 points on my licence from almost 3 years ago.

My NCB is only 2 years though because I changed cars and they would not count my previous NCB from the old car - a humble Polo for some reason. (Bar5tards).

By the sound of things though I could be in for a nice surprise when I get the quote from Greenlight as I think my present Insurance company is taking the pi55 somewhat.
