Recently swapped my VW Bora 130 TDI for a 06 Leon Sport 2.0 TDI.

Over three years I regularly got 55-60mpg per tank fill with the VW. The first two tank fills with the Leon (over similar journies) achieved only 50mpg. Is this typical? Example:

Recently I travelled from Newcastle to Huddersfield (A19/A1/M62) a total of 120 miles and the onboard computer showed 50mpg average. The return journey (same route but with much more stop/start driving) returned 55mpg. My VW would have returned 58-60mpg for both.

I have heard that an engine re-map not only increases power but also can increase MPG. Does any body advise the £329 charge as worthwhile?

I can't comment on the remap but would settle for that mpg in my 140 Ref Sport:(I did trade a Scooby in for this though so have probably not adjusted the old driving style yet:p

Motorway runs never see a return of more than 48mpg in mine and I've never (apart from some down hill cruising short journeys) returned anything more than 50mpg on steady runs.

Any thoughts on what mpg difference my 18" wheels make over the standard 16"?

Not sure about the 18" alloys but mine has 17" with Dunlop Sport 9090 tyres and the best motorway mpg I have seen is 61mpg (I was amazed too!) on a journey 75mile from Huddersfield to Hull.

If mpg remained constant at the mid-fifties I think I would accept it but the variation (for no good reason) annoys me. This morning's drive into work (15 miles from the coast through Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Gateshead) achieved 56mpg!

I'm also guessing that the Bora had a lot more miles on it than the new Leon. This has a big impact on MPG.

Seat has just over 10K on the clock but my VW gave me 55-60mpg from new and had done 41K when I traded it.

I have about 8k on a 2.0TDI and it is getting better MPG with time when new it struggled to get 40MPG and now usually gets 45 apparantly they need 15-20K on the clock to get the MPG up

On my Leon FR TDI driving to and from work every day I get around 45mpg, thats driving swiftly but not fast.. Ive seen it end up at 30mpg if ive been late for work..

r u guys driving at 40 mph !!! we get no more than 40 to the gallon in ours both motorway driving and in and out of back roads :)

sent mine to Seat dealer x 3 times best they got doing NO more than 55mph and a/c off was 50mpg brim to brim, my reply was I didn't buy a FR to go at those speeds!! but that is SEAT's acceptance test before they will reject the car??!! ..........................................

I have 140 TDI Sport and typical consumption is around 45 -48 mpg this being achieved across all types of driving. Highest I have got is 50mpg on an early morning A road run. She now has 15000 miles on her

About to trade her in for a Honda Type S with 2.2 CDTI engine so will see how it compares

Average on my FR tdi is currently 44, although Ive only done 1k so far. Best Ive had on a journey was 56 (stuck in traffic at 50-60mph) and worst was 40.

Must admit I am driving it gently overall though because of the low mileage, but it does spend a fair bit of time close to 3 figures (oh and ahem, see avatar)

I think the issue here is with expectation. It is starting to become very common knowledge on here that the true fuel consumption in day to day driving conditions never matches up to manufacturers claims.

Considering that FR has a neatly tuned, uprated version of a standard PD diesel engine, I am not surprised that some fuel economy is sacrificed. It is also commonly noted that the 1.9 TDI is considerably less thirsty than the 2.0.

But it's not all doom and gloom. Ask any TFSI driver for their MPG. You will be considerably more smug than they will be ;)

Try some of the Honda web sites like this one and you'll find mpg around 38-42mpg - plus other problems. ...........................................

Is it capable of that speed? :D:D Ive had my Fr TDI up to 135 (not on a public road of course  ) I did feel that there was more to go..

Oh yes :D Id imagine theres a little bit more to go, maybe an indicated 145, not bad at all really.. Prob around a 5-6% speedo innacuracy I would guess.

Using my sat-nav as a speedo my fr tdi's speedo was roughly 5mph out at anything above about 50.

My girlfriend's dad get's 50's and usually 60's in his 2.2 CDTI without driving too much like a granny and has never had a problem with the car. Shows how different everyone's experiences are.

My sat nav is the same - shows 5mph less than the speedo.:headhurt:
