*sigh* Loss of Boost on FR TDI 130

After getting the steering rack replaced my cars been great feeling alot tighter on the steering/handling front but now it seems to be time for another issue.

I was cruising up the road in town with the window open and when I accelerated abit to stop someone cutting in and I noticed I could hear alot of turbo/air noise as if the wastegate was open or something.

So now as soon as the turbo spins up to the point were usually your feeling the boost its all getting vented somewhere around the engine.
There's lots of black smoke if you do rev it abit which I would put down to the engine running too rich as its not getting enough air.

Its late so I've put the car in the garage and plan to have a look to see if any of the pipes from the turbo to the intercooler have come loose or something.

Is there anything else I should look at/out for?

[edit]: Forgot to mention its an 05 beeza FR TDI

Boost leak, simple to diagnose... not so easy to fix!

You need to check all the pipe work from the intercooler (SMIC on FR or FMIC on Cupra) running to the back of the engine, make sure its tight and there is no problems.

Might help to have some one give it a few beans stood still with the boonet up so you can locate it down the pipe work.

Thats my guess anyway :)

not on the intercooler pipeing!dont think the turbo would enjoy that :) as t.spark said tho get some1 else to rev while you browse wont be hard to hear where it is comoing from as it is a pritty load hissing noise will just be a split intercooler pipe or a pipe has popped off which is exstreamly common! good luck mate :)

Ok just a quick update for you guys.

I had a look at it today and the soft pipe that goes into the intercooler has popped out on both the IC end and the long plastic pipe end.
Unfortunetly I can't get at the IC end to try and put it in as the driver's side light unit is in the way.

So as its still under warrently I'm not gonna try and fight with taking the light unit out, and I'm just gonna drop it round to seat first thing in the morning and let them sort it out.

Seems to be a trend that everytime I start to think about changing my car something happens with the one I have.
Still not sure what I'll change to, atm its either a Ibiza Cupra TDI (more sensible option) or a MINI Cooper S (more fun, less sensible option).

more fun mini cooper  why not 1.8t?

Well you hit the nail on the head of a difficult question.

I like the Ibiza but I'm thinking of getting something different.
I'm only doing about 30 mile or so to work a day so I could probably get away with getting a petrol now and having some fun.

The mini handles great and is serious fun but if I decide to stick with a diesel the only car that appeals to me is the Cupra TDI.

I'm certainly not ruling the Cupra 1.8T out its always a possiblity.

Lucky enough I'm not elderly or bald and I don't live in London so that statement wouldn't apply.
There's no denying the mini is one sweet handling car, especially compared to my FR.
I reckon it would probably take alot of money and tweaking to get an Ibiza to come close to handling like the mini.

Ofcourse if i got a good price on a cupra i could always spend the saving on a good set of coilover's, that would be a good start improve the ibiza'a handling.

You should wait to see what the next ibiza is gonna be like. If it gets multi link rear suspension like the Audi A1 then it will be more than a match for the mini in the handle stakes without looking a bit too "suspect
" :lol::p

I would have said the same but recently i drove the supercharged one to around 210 (works). The power is good but the best bit is the handling. Much better than ibiza IMO.

Yeah, that would be my point. The 1.8T is a real nice engine and tunes nicely, but for me I think I want something more than just a good engine this time round.

I'm gonna have a test drive in the new cooper s sometime later this week, the new turbo charged engine is supposed to be really nice even if it doesn't have the character of the old supercharged engine, but it is more economical so thats something.

Ah... the choices, isn't thinking about changing your car fun :headhurt:

This discussion's went abit of topic but is certainly getting interesting and has taken my mind of my poor FR.

The mini is a much better car than my ibiza but I know that VAG have something in the works to show it up, and more than likely males wont feel ashamed to drive it. Just teasing I would drive a mini, but its not really my cup of tea from a ownership point of view as everyone would think it was my mums car, and also my mum would always want to drive it, as would my GF.

Gaz whats the highest insurance group you would want to insure?Does it have to be a hatchback?

the mini's of course are amazing handling cars but im a vag man so i dont like it :bleh: get an audi s3

Don't really need/want a bigger car, I used to have a TDCI Focus mk1 facelift, great handling car, ok engine but I really didn't need the big car and the size can be annoying when in town (I miss the heated leather seat's though).

I actually had a look round an S3 a few weeks ago and damn is that a nice car, great bucket seat's too but £30k... I don't think thats gonna happen for a few years.

@Poverty: I don't plan of waiting that long before changing my car, plus I noticed in another thread that production of Cupra's and FR's are stopping in week47 so I'm thinking over the options now.

Maybe look at 2.0T A3's and just tune it up to S3 performance levels?

Well group 15/16 is about as high as I want to go for now, any higher would really hurt my bank account.
