Storm Warning

Hi, been searching around for answers but drawn a blank. My MK1 Leon TDi has developed random indicators and hazard lights. They flash in no particular pattern and sometimes not at all. I can get around the problem a little with manual moving the stalk in a flashing manner.

I think I need a new flasher unit but I could do with confirmation of this.. with a part number(expected price) and where it is on the car - is it behind the hazard switch?

Many Thanks. Oh, if there is any parts people I would be interesting buying the part mail order as my local dealer is useless.

Ah. right, I will take a look this evening, is there actually a flasher unis there then? Also, are you Stan 24v that used to be about on the corrado forum?

The relay is the flasher unit I think mate, and yes thats me. Just seen your name and recognised it too, seems a few of us are going from the C to the Leon.

Parts people seem confused about the term flasher unit, they say is doesn't have one listed.

I've been running both the Leon as my daily for a few years now, but I think I'll be selling it before long and running the C daily for a while... just can't get enough of it :-D

on the 1.8t petrols - but i'm sure it'll be the same across the range ... the flasher electrics & relay is built-in to the hazzard switch.

Dont have the part number, but i'm sure it's under £30 for a new one - had to change mine about 3 months back :)

Hi, I tried to buy this item from my local dealer and they reffered me to the service dept in case it was something much worse. Sounds like they are just trying it on to me. Is there any other issues it could be or should I just take a punt and fit a new flasher unit?
Cheers.

Just buy one. Chances are it's that. It's a common issue with the unit.
If not then you have a spare or sell it on here. Someone will always need one :)

Don't suppose anyone knows what the part number would be for the unit on a y plate leon tdi?

The dealer says they need a part number or chassis number (which I can't get to until tomorrow). and they say it is unlikely they have stock :wtf:

sounds like its the hazard switch. i presume you have tried switching it on and off a few times to see it if effects it.

Doesnt sound like you will, but if you pay out to replace to indicator stalk etc it may be worth looking into the costs to upgrade to cruise control while at it if not already on the car.
meanwhile on another thread...

The random nature effects the hazards too, would that eliminate the stalk as the problem?

A newer Leon would be on my short list IF I sold the VR.. but I just couldn't do it.

it would certainly be logical to think it would eliminate the stalk.

just one thing to elimate the obvious. Check that all the indicator bulbs are working. you never know.

Everything points to the hazzard switch being faulty......

You dont say where you are, but the dealer must be cr@p .... my local did not have the pre-facelift part in stock, bud did have the later one ... they were 99% sure it would fit with only changing the front cover over so gave it to me to try :) said if it's not right just bring it back - and this was an in-stock item.

Also there could be someone nearby where you stay that would be willing/able to swap with theres to see if it's gone ......

I'm in Lincoln, the dealer is a motor group dealing with many other makes too.. like a coop. They don't even stock this item and wouldn't even order without my VIN. I have now found a local VAG specialist who were top, supplied the part same day and even offered to fit for free (if I had the car with me :) ) They too said they would take back if it didn't work.

Got it home and the problem had gone away... I'll keep it at hand incase it reappears..which I am sure it will.

I had the same problem with my indicators,i replaced the flasher unit and the power supply relay number 110,and it is not water either, sealed the so called leak, still no joy,the problem is at the column stalk if it persists, like mine did.Got so angry one day that i just jiggled the indicator stalk up and down and the problem is now gone for good.

I did a lot of jiggling of switch and stalk to try and see if I could recreate the problem but it seems to have fixed it :-D

Hi,

Just had my idicators do the same, so I think I'll try the flasher unit.
Didn't know where it was till I read your probs.
Thanks.
